"So how come you haven't killed me yet?" Sonic yelled up at him.

It was somewhat mocking, but his tone showed more genuine interest in the question.

Shadow always explained and insulted on how much he hated Sonic, and yet he never did anything permanent about it.

Sure they fought, and it did leave marks on both of them, but afterwards, Shadow would leave with some type of awe in his face.

Respect.

Someone who truly hated Sonic would have him dead in seconds. And if not dead, would trap him and torture him until he wasn't sane anymore.

The fights seemed more like to blow off some steam for Shadow, as Sonic started to catch on that that was the case.

He would seem more light and lose after the fights, one time even thanking Sonic for fighting with him.

But the constant expression of hatred left Sonic confused.

Maybe he really did hate him. Even though Sonic hasn't done anything personal to him, at least he didn't think so, he still had deep internal hatred for him.

Sonic looked up at him, awaiting some type of answer. He wasn't really expecting one, since it was more of a touchy subject, he thought.

He was expecting to be insulted, having that be an excuse for the real reason, but Shadow seemed to just stare at him.

It wasn't a hard stare, and rather, it was quite soft.

If Sonic was close enough, he could see Shadow's pupils dodging around his features slightly.

Sonic watched his chest rise before falling quickly, then he looked behind him.

Shadow rocked his head and feet, looking around.

Then he looked back at Sonic.

"Eggman seems to want to do that. Wouldn't want to take his joy, wouldn't I? Sure, he had told me to do so, but that one time when I had you in my grip, he erupted like a man-child." He finally said.

Except, Shadow stepped down from the brick wall. He was getting closer to Sonic.

"Well, that doesn't explain the constant empty threats, Shadow." Sonic put all of his weight on his right hip, tilting his head.

He tried to keep his tone confident, but concerned at the same time.

Shadow twisted his rings on his wrists, obviously uncomfortable. He stayed silent for a long time. He even lowered his voice compared to when he was on the brick wall.

"We're competitors. Rivals. Did I read the books wrong? We aren't... friends. I'm supposed to remind you why I even fight you in the first place. You get too cocky, and need an ego reset. I'm your guy for that."

Shadow's smile was extremely fake, but his tone seemed prideful. He was good with words, but not expressions.

Sonic chuckled apologetically.

"Nobody said we have to be rivals. Hell, hasn't Eggman tricked you enough? We can be competitive, it's fun I'll admit, but you don't have to treat me like dirt under your shoe."

Sonic stretched himself out at the mention of competing, which made Shadow furrow his brows.

He stayed silent at the Eggman comment. Having a hard time to think of words.

Usually, he would leave at this time. Sonic would try and talk serious to him a few times, especially that one time when he thanked him for the fight.
