The young woman in front of me seems worried. During lectures in University, I have given attention to all of the symptoms she is showing right now. Though, my notes show me the girl has quite some experience with therapy already, so for her to seem so nervous about it is intriguing to me.
She is not alone, I have to admit. I spent years studying for this, and I know exactly what to do, having practiced so many times before. However, this is my first real client. My story is only now truly going to begin. Of course, that is nerve-wracking.

"So..." A deep breath gets sucked in, and my fingers point to the small text of information I've got in my hands as I let my eyes roam over it like I haven't memorized it already. "It reads here that you have had several psychologists before but abruptly stopped with therapy every time?"

"Yes, I felt misunderstood, and maybe I wasn't fully open to it yet", she says as she shifts a bit in her chair, trying to find a more comfortable position, not knowing the uneasiness has nothing to do with the chair. It has to do with her consciousness, still worried about those previous times of therapy, and worried about this time presumably.
"But now I am."

"What changed?"

"A job. Falling in love. A complicated situation. Heartbreak", she sighs as she looks down to her lap. "That kinda stuff."

"And those make you fully open to therapy now?"

"Yes." The girl seems serious but it is not convincing me just yet. "I can not deal with this stuff on my own."

Truthfully, I am intrigued. The story seems fascinating. Mysterious. She is starting off vague, forcing me to ask her the questions, and I actually like that. She doesn't mind giving me control. Like this, it is easier for me to get to the roots of the problems she came here for today.
Nonetheless, I have to keep in mind this is a real person, a real story, real struggles, real pain. It is not the kind of client roleplay like I have had in University thousands of times. It is alright for me to be interested, that is part of my job as her new therapist, but I have to keep in mind that I am here for her, not for me.

Pushing my thoughts away, I try to completely focus on the woman again. Tessa Michéle Davis.

"Okay, then, tell me about it."

"Uhm, so I have dealt with depression and social anxiety a lot throughout my life. A lack of motivation. Couldn't pursue a degree because of it", she quickly summarizes, although that information is public to me already. "Then, my parents basically gave me this ultimatum."

That is new.

"Ultimatum?" I scribble the word down.

"Yes, so either get a job or pursue a degree, and if I did not, they would kick me out."

"Would they really?" I ask, pausing my pencil on the paper.

Is the relationship with her parents important in this matter? I only have forty minutes today, and fifteen are already spent. Time flies by faster than you think when you're fully focused on a session. The first times talking are most important to be fully focussed. It paves the way for the future of the sessions. The therapist has to ask the right questions. I have to.

"I don't think so. They were just trying to push me in the right direction. At least, what to them seemed to be the right direction for me", she shrugs nonchalantly. "But I guess it helped because I undertook action."

Okay, I guess that was it for her parents for today.

"What kind of action?"

"I applied for a job, and I got it."

Her ponytail gets tightened by her hands, although I believe it was already tight enough. To me, this indicates that she is getting slightly more nervous, and I have the suspicion we are nearing more sensitive content soon.
