'We've got something' the DI said to Jack and Simone. 'Some kids playing on an old industrial site heard a woman screaming. Now don't get your hopes up, we don't know it's Nikki, but we've got units on the way over there now. I'll let you know as soon as I know anything'
Jack jumped up. 'I need to go, where is it. You need to take me there'
The DI put his hand on Jacks shoulder, pushing him back down. 'No' he said firmly. 'We can't have you rushing in there when we don't know what we're dealing with. You stay here. There isn't anything you can do.'
Jack dropped his head into his hands. Please god let her be ok he thought to himself, over and over. If she's ok, I promise I'll leave her alone to be happy for the rest of her life. Just let her be ok.
He got up out of his chair and started pacing the office, rubbing his hands through his hair. He noticed Nikki's coat hanging up. Why hadn't he noticed that before? He went over to it without even thinking, touched the soft material, breathed in her scent. He could see her wearing it, she'd worn it when they'd had a drink a few nights ago, before all this other shit had happened. He remembered her linking her arm through his as they'd left the pub slightly tipsy, holding onto each other for support. Laughing, talking. Jack and Nikki. Normality.
