Esmeray's POV
Sitting in the guest waiting room of the grand Palace made me feel nauseated. I couldn't quite shake off the events of the day. I focused on the evening sky greying, thinking about how it perfectly matched my gradual mood changes from morning to evening. I began anticipating the arrival of the stars in the sky; a dim light within the surrounding darkness to shine over that dull Kingdom.
I thought about the irony of it all. A man like Zander who had enough power for his ranks, craved much more of it and would stop at nothing to get to that stage. Everything and everyone else were unimportant to him. And then, a man like Theodore who possessed the power that Zander clearly desired, used it to his advantage at every given opportunity. It seemed to me that both of their hearts had been corrupted by that very power.
That's if they even had a heart to begin with.
I looked up from the slightly crumpled documents that were residing in my shaking hands, as I heard the sound of high heels approaching me from a dark hallway on the opposite end of where I had been sitting.
A tall, beautiful woman with wavy, auburn hair graciously carried herself across the marble flooring in my direction. She was wearing a short black dress with a long, fancy jacket that made me stare at her in complete awe. Everything about her screamed authority. I instantly looked back down at my small stack of documents when I caught her looking directly at me, to show her my full respect.
Her footsteps grew louder and louder with each passing second and eventually, I felt her presence not too far from me.
"Miss Esmeray Croí, is it not?" she asked kindly. Even her voice sounded divine.
I looked up and caught sight of her blood-red irises. They perfectly matched her hair colour, making her extremely pale skin tone appear darker than it actually was.
"That is correct." I replied, almost like a robot.
She smiled and sat on the seat next to mine.
"I'm Sapphire. I'm here to inform you that Theodore will be running a bit late for your meeting again. It's his thing apparently, to be late to most of his meetings." She exaggerated with a sarcastic eye roll. I laughed quietly, yet quite nervously at her comment.
"That's okay." I answered. "I can hand these papers over to someone else from the High Court then. Prince Theodore doesn't need to mess up his schedule for this meeting."
I really didn't want to be in the same room as Theodore after that evening, so I tried to do everything to avoid him. Again.
From the corner of my eye, I saw Sapphire looking at me curiously. "Of course. That can be arranged for you if you do not wish to wait for him." She stated. "I will go fetch Anthony. He will be happy to take care of your registration for you."
