“I had another prophecy come to me last night.” Raine told her brother as she began to fold up her blankets. She knew that here in the woods, that they called home, they could never stay in one place for long.
“You did?” Ira asked with fake interest in his voice. He believed his sister was lying to him and just wanted to feel important but he asked anyway, “What did it say?”
This was an easy question for Raine, as she had memorized both prophecies, “Two siblings of gold shall begin the quest, four will join, but only three of the servants of light shall see it to the end. They will all find what they need in Missula, the town of memories. And it will lead the servants to the darkness. In the heart of the darkness the Doors of Death lie. Open the Doors and all will find salvation.” As she finished reciting the prophecy a veil of silence hung in the air. Neither sibling wanted to speak in fear of ruining it.
Ira broke it first, “Um….. So what does it mean?”
“It means we have to go save everyone from the ‘darkness’” Raine began to start packing her things in a flurry of clothes and blankets. When her brother did not follow she began to ask, “What’s wrong? We have to hurry or-”
Ira stomped toward Raine and began to grab her things out of her hands. “What are you doing?” Raine asked in a scared tone. “We- we… STOP!”
Suddenly Ira realized what he was doing and in a hurry tried to cover his fury aimed toward his sister. Then he saw tears streaming down his sisters face. “I’m sorry Raine,” he began, “It’s just how do you know it’s about us?” He didn’t want things to change. Ira liked his life roaming alone with his sister. He especially didn’t want anyone relying on him except for Raine.
His sister looked up at him and asked, “How do you know it isn’t?” Still with tears rolling down her face, she turned away from her brother and repeated her question but softer this time, “How do you know it isn’t?”
“I just know-” Ira began.
“But you’re WRONG!” Raine yelled at her brother. “You know it’s true! Why else would it come to me!” She then began to swing her bag on her shoulder that was halfway full and pick up the things that weren’t in there. “And I’m going to carry on the prophecy. Whether you decide to help me or not!”
Ira loved his sister and never even meant to anger her. He couldn’t put her in danger but he couldn’t go on that quest. “Don’t go.” He told her. “Stay here with me. You can forget all about that quest and prophecy and stay safe.”
The suggestion of that disgusted her, “How can you say that when there are so many people who need OUR help!” Then she recited a line from the first prophecy, “Kingdoms fall at the hands of evil… and they need our help. So, our you coming with me or not?” she asked as tears still fell from her eyes.
Ira thought she looked too cute, frail, innocent, and weak to go anywhere at the moment. He glanced from the forest surrounding the clearing they were in and back to his sister. He did not know what to do. He wanted his sister to stay safe with him but she wanted to go ‘save the world from darkness’ but he did not.
“I can’t go with you.” Ira told her in a low voice.
He saw the disappointment crawl across Raine’s face and she began to cry harder. Then she looked up at her brother and wiped tears from her eyes, “I guess this is- goodbye- then, brother,’ she said, sobbing in between her words.
“Goodbye Raine. I’m sorry we had a difference of opinion,” Ira could only look at the ground as his only sister walked away from him.
He walked over to a near by tree and slumped down to the base of it. He told himself he didn’t go with Raine because he was thought she would come back to him eventually but the real reason was because he was scared. Scared about his sister getting hurt, the things they would run into, of the journey itself and himself getting injured.
He sat there for hours and hours until the sun went down. He didn’t bother crawling over to his blankets to go to sleep because he knew that God wouldn’t be so kind as to let him sleep. He suffered through the cold night and thought of his sister and began to except that he would never see her again. If he went looking for her and even found her she would never again except him as her brother or a friend.

As Raine sat down for the first time that night she realized she neither had any idea where she was or where she was going. She wished she had her brother with her because he would know exactly what to do and could comfort her now because she was very scared and she knew Ira would be brave. Raine thought of him through the night as she shivered in the night.
Then she froze as she heard a rustle of leaves and snap of a twig. Raine looked around but couldn’t see anything as it was pitch black outside. Then out from behind a tree a silver wolf appeared. It glittered like the moon although Raine wondered how that was possible as there was no stars or moon out tonight for it’s fur to reflect.
“Do not worry” The wolf seemed to tell her. Then Raine realized the wolf was speaking to her. It said, “Your brother will be back.”
Raine couldn’t help but think that the wolf was very wrong. Her brother would never come help her. Ira had made up his mind and nothing could change that.
