As she leaves her little shack she wonders how she will pay for her next meal, pay her landlord for the little rented house, and what she will do for her next odd job. She feels starved but has no way to eat. It’s a crude way to get food but decides to go into the forest to hunt anyway. It’s better than vegetables she thought. Way better than vegetables. She wandered into the woods with her handmade bow and arrows until she saw the little girl, snuggled deep into her blankets. She took a step back as to not disturb her but when she did a twig snapped under her feet.

“Who’s there?!” Raine awoke with a start. She scanned the surrounding forest but in seeing nothing decided to calm herself. She thought it must be a squirrel or some other animal but as she tucked herself in she heard another stick crack. Now she was wide awake and out of her makeshift bed. Quickly, Raine ran to pick up a nearby branch and brandished it in the air. “Come out and show yourself! Before I- before… I come find you myself!” She tried sounding as threatening as possible.

But as a raccoon ran out from behind the trees she suddenly felt as foolish as ever. Raine threw the branch away from herself. Feeling scared and alone she sat down once again on her makeshift bed when, suddenly from the shadows, a figure emerged.

“Who are you?!” Raine started to exclaim.

The young woman raised her hands as if in defense and said, “Whoa there! Before you get all sassy on me let me explain!”

“Then you better explain fast,” Raine put her hand to her waist as if to conceal a weapon she had hidden there. Better to seem more dangerous than you really are she thought to herself. “Sit over there,” Raine growled at the black-clad figure as she pointed to a fallen tree that was nearby. “Now first off. What’s your name?”

The young woman responded, “It’s Hisoka and I have no idea why I’m listening to you because for one thing I’m older-”

“I don’t care what you think! All I want to know is why you were watching me.” Raine screamed at Hisoka.

“What?! I wasn’t watching you! I came into the woods to hunt when I saw you. I tried stepping away but that’s when I knew you’d heard me.” Hisoka countered. Then she suddenly remembered the bow and arrows in her hand, “But why am explaining myself to you when I could just kill you and be done with my problems.”

Taken very aback Raine exclaimed “Wait! What?! No! Don’t do that! I just need to know you won’t hurt me. That’s all… What are you doing in this forest anyway? All the way out here?”

“There’s a town not that far that way,” Hisoka explained as she pointed eastward, The town that way is called Aspertia City. That’s where I live. Not much to look at there though. It’s a city FULL of poverty.”

Raine asked, “So your poor too then? Since you come from a city FULL of poverty.”

“Yea…” Hisoka told her as she hung her head low and kicked at the dirt.

Raine gave her a hard look and told her “It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. If it makes you feel better I’m very poor too. I just wander from place to place with my brother.”

“Where’s your brother then?” Hisoka asked with a look of curiosity in her eyes.

“Well…” Raine began to explain to Hisoka about her fight with her brother, the prophecy and everything else that had happened to her over the past couple of days including when that silver she-wolf spoke to her.

After Raine finished Hisoka asked “Are you sure your not just a schizophrenic and you heard that voice in your head? I mean wolves can’t speak! Have you heard any other voices in your head lately?”

“Hey! I’m not imagining it!” Raine argued, “It’s true. Everything I told you is true.”

“Well if you insist” Hisoka sighed, “But we should go find your brother. He’s probably looking for you.”

“No he’s not. Didn’t you hear the part of my story where we had this huge fight! He’s probably happy without his annoying sister around.”

Hisoka burst into a hysterical fit of laughter and when she finally managed to calm down she told Raine, “I know boys and they always think they’ll be better off without the girl in their life but believe me he’ll find out sooner or later he needs you. He’ll be back. Don’t worry.” After a while of standing there in the diminishing light Hisoka added, “Well… we better get started!”
