We pulled away from the kiss, gasping for air. The smile on his face was unmatched by any I've seen before.
"Bucky... I love you but... what happens now? If we fix whatever Loki broke. I don't know what that means for us, for me. I'm not supposed to be here." The reality of everything was settling in and I began to feel terrified for what was next.
"Strange... we'll call Dr. Strange. He'll figure something out. We can keep you here. We have to keep you here." Bucky replied, grabbing my hands. He was speaking to me, but it wasn't me he was trying to convince.
I nodded. "We should go talk to everyone. Figure out the plan."
"Yeah." He agreed, grabbing my face and kissing me once more before we walked out.
We didn't see anyone in the hall so Bucky asked Jarvis where everyone was. "The conference room, Sergeant Barnes." We made our way there in silence. Bucky opened the door and everyone was seated, except Loki and Thor were not in the room.
"Where's Loki?" I questioned.
Sam stood up and walked towards me. "He's in his cell. How are you feeling?"
"Wanda filled everyone in?" I turned to her and she nodded. "Okay. Well, I guess it's time for us to make a plan."
Bucky took a seat and started talking. "We need to call Strange. If there's any way to fix this and keep Caroline here-"
"If she's not supposed to be here, she shouldn't be." Steve said emotionlessly.
"Cap..." Peter whispered.
"I'm with the kid. That's harsh, Rogers." Tony spoke up too.
There was a mild pause before Natasha spoke up. "I love you, Caroline. But is he wrong? We don't know what to do, what would happen if you're not supposed to be here and we kept you here."
"So we're supposed to just dump her there and move on? We all have memories of her, hell I have a scar from her! What happens when she's gone?" Sam snapped, causing me to flinch.
"Steve, you don't mean that. You're only saying this because of her feelings for me-" Bucky spoke, his voice calm and emotionless, a tone I know means he's holding back.
Steve abruptly stood up. "And you're only saying this because of your feelings for her. Which are not real, Buck! The multiverse split or... whatever the hell happened and those feelings are. Not. Real!" He shouted at the end. Bucky pushed his chair back as he stood up, glaring at Steve while his chair fell in the ground behind him.
"We'll call Strange." Tony spoke firmly. "No decisions will be made until he and Bruce are here. We will all decide this." He turned to Steve. "Together."
Steve didn't answer, he just walked out of the room. I could feel everyone's eyes on me, all the varying emotions. I didn't speak, what was there to say now?
"I think it's important to remember that Caroline didn't do this. This isn't her fault." Sam announced to everyone.
"But does that mean we trust her? How can we even trust our own memories of what Steve said is true?" Natasha replied.
A brief silence came over everyone. "But..." Peter spoke quietly. "What if it's not?"
We all turned to him but Tony replied. "What do you mean, kid?"
"We keep assuming she was never really here and Cap thinks the memories were implanted. But what if when whatever Loki did what he did, it changed our universe, even the past, by putting her here. So that technically, she always existed here."
More quiet. Wanda was the one to break it this time. "Truthfully, I believe that more than implanted memories. And that's from someone who can get in other people's minds... it's not that easy to manipulate. Especially not that well. I think Peter is right, reality itself had to of been altered, not just memories."
"But then where does that leave me?" I whispered.
