Wei Wuxian stares blankly at the book succinctly titled Dark Curses Vol. III splayed across the library floor and blindly hopes that if he picks it up to read it through for the fifth time, it will magically have a new chapter titled: How To Be Rid Of a Love Curse Without Actually BreakingThe Terms Of It.
He had had the same prayer on his sixth skim of Vol. II and third attempt at Vol.V and had been rewarded neither time. He groans as he stretches his hand out, knowing he will read it regardless of whether or not it provides him with any new information. He has long since stopped pestering the dragon for any help on the subject on his curse—especially after the disastrous blizzard he caused when he half-jokingly tried to learn Lan Wangji'stype in order to find him a "proper" bride—but he still spends most of his evenings in the library,bleary-eyed and slouching as he trudges through the Lans extensive collection.
Wei Wuxian had always known love curses were tricky but through his research into the legends and records of their use he learns that they are much more than just "tricky", that they can be downright cruel.
(He likely should have expected this, the affairs of the heart are complicated and delicate after all; the organ is one of the powerful and fragile things contained in the human body.)
They are true to name, "easily" broken by love or true love, as most stories put it, but this is where the simplicity dies. How this love is given or received—via a declaration, a gift, a vow, a kiss —all seems to vary depending on the story, and the terms of the curse, who needs to fall in love with who is typically determined by whoever casts it. And since Lan Wangji won't confess the terms and Wei Wuxian can't imagine Lan Wangji not having at least three different people desperately in love with him at the castle who could have easily broken the curse then, Wei Wuxian is left to believe that this curse is broken by Lan Wangji needing to fall in love.
(Which Wei Wuxian had tried to help with, even offering to go find him some suitable suitors, but Lan Wangji had been very clear in expressing his distaste in Wei Wuxian's help with such affairs.)
(Wei Wuxian wonders if he is the first to make such an offer when he catches a hint of impatience in Lan Wanji's golden eyes.)
And so, since it's not as if Lan Wangji is about to fall in love with him —Lan Wangji still being a dragon is more than enough proof of that—Wei Wuxian can only try to break it via a loophole. Which he is learning simply might not exist. He's learned how to break nearly every other curse that exists, found the loopholes in half the spells the Lans know, and has even been successful in creating some of his own—for research purposes only , he swears. Despite all this work, all he's managed to do in regards to Lan Wangji'scurse is nearly set himself on fire after attempting a trick he found in a similar curse.
This, understandably, left his dragon husband quite distraught and Wei Wuxian banned from any more practical attempts. And when left with only theory work, his progress is minimal to non-existent. Because he doesn't like to worry his husband with his late-night endeavours - especially not after singing his beautiful new summer robes - he devotes most of his day to trying to bring as much joy as he can to Lan Wangji's life, usually by treating him to all the things he's missed out on by being nearly twenty-foot dragon revered by two tiny villages. Tomorrow, he hopes, will be his biggest surprise yet and that brings a light smile to Wei Wuxian's face and dredges up just enough energy for him to manage three chapters of the book before falling into a dead sleep at the desk.
(He's thankful he jerks awake early enough to dart back to his room, his dragon host still oblivious to his work.)*
When the morning sun has fully lit the soft and dewy blades of grass their rabbits spend their days happily nibbling on, Wei Wuxian marches up to his husband and shoos him away."I have a surprise I'm planning," Wei Wuxian explains to the incredibly affronted dragon. "So I need you to go occupy yourself for the day."This makes Lan Wangji narrow his eyes in obvious suspicion but Wei Wuxian ignores it, waving his arms a bit more dramatically now.
