Nick let out a sigh, glaring at Shèyaa as he shook his head in disapproval. "It's only a dollar, it's not that much. Just go ahead and buy it." Shèyaa rolled his eyes as he shoved the bag of chips into his backpack.
"What you so worried for? They not even gone notice." Shèyaa didn't see how it was a problem, it was only a bag of chips. Why was it such an issue?
"But you do this every week, they'll probably catch on at some point." Nick mentioned. "Are you ever gone stop?" Over time, Nick grew tired of Shèyaa's reckless behavior. He only wanted Shèyaa to realize the type of trouble he could get himself into.
Rather than listen, Shèyaa decided to walk away, shoving more items into his bag in the process. He completely disregarded everything Nick said. Nick wished he could say he was surprised but he truly wasn't; this was just how Shèyaa was—careless.
"Can you please just stop? You're-"
"Ion get why you care so much, it's just a few things. They'll get over it." Shèyaa assured him.
"So what? That's not the point. I'm tired of you doing shit like this, why won't you just quit?" Shèyaa could sense that Nick was getting upset with him.
"Listen baby, taking a few things won't hurt anyone. It's really not that serious." He replied, downplaying the situation. While he was aware that what he was doing was wrong, Shèyaa didn't bother to stop. Why? Because it was fun to him. Nick's concerns weren't enough to make him stop.
"What aren't you understanding? You could end up in jail behind this shit." Nick argued, his voice slightly raised. Honestly, Shèyaa couldn't care less about the consequences of his actions, especially since he never had to deal with them.
"Ain't nobody going to jail baby, calm down."
"Nah, I ain't gone calm down, you not getting what I'm saying!" Nick shouted. "Stupid shit like this gone get you locked up and I ain't tryna see you behind bars!" The last thing Nick wanted was for Shèyaa to end up in jail, or even prison for his actions. The shouting caught the attention of the store clerk who quickly came over to assess the issue.
"What seems to be the problem?" The clerk questioned as he stared at the pair. Shèyaa had to think quickly.
"Everything is alright sir, we're just having a lil disagreement. That's all." Shèyaa lied through his teeth as he chuckled nervously. The clerk wasn't born yesterday, he could tell something was up. It didn't take long for him to notice the bag full of stolen merchandise.
"Oh, I see what's going on now. Y'all were stealing, weren't you?" He was furious. Nick wanted to explain that he was only trying to stop Shèyaa but why bother? It wasn't like the clerk was going to believe him. Why put up an argument?
"I—I wasn't." Shèyaa spoke, stammering over his words. He wasn't sure what to tell the clerk. "I was only um..." He didn't bother to finish his sentence. The clerk glared at the pair in disgust.
"Since you two wanna steal out of my store, I'm calling the cops." Shèyaa's eyes widened. He didn't want Nick to get locked up, in fact, he didn't want either of them to end up behind bars. How was he going to get out of this? Shèyaa didn't have much time left to think so he simply shouted the first thing that came to mind.
"Nick run!" At first, Nick stared at Shèyaa as if he were crazy but soon realized this may be the only way they would be free. For a moment, he hesitated before running out the corner store with Shèyaa following closely behind him.
"Shèyaa we could've-"
"Just shut up and keep running!" Shèyaa spat. He didn't have the time to argue with Nick at the moment, the only thing he was focused on was getting far away from the store. Nick's eyes welled up with tears as they continued to run. They weren't tears of sadness but rather a product of rage. He was upset that Shèyaa's actions nearly got them into trouble. What would it take for Shèyaa to finally learn his lesson?
