Russian revolution. Revolutionaries break into the palace, try to kill the royal family. Loyal guards protect the family, and get most of them out. Anastasia is briefly taken captive and when her mother screams for her, Dimitri breaks away to find her. He finds her about to be raped, goes into beast mode, and kill the man responsible. He hauls her up, and drags her through the secret tunnels in the palace out into the cold, Russian winter.
By this time, the rest of her family is on a train already, in their way to France where her grandmother is. Anastasia and Dimitri must find a way out of Russia without getting themselves killed, so they carefully make their way out if Moscow to St. Petersburg where his mother lives. There, they rest and replenish their supplies, and eventually make it on out again with the help of Dimitri's friend, Vladimir ???. They make their way to Paris, and reunite with the Romanovs almost two years later. A party is held in the honor of the lost princess returning, and Dimitri looks in in sorrow at the girl he has fallen in love with being so utterly apart from him. But true love prevails, and she turns down the crown she is offered by her grandmother in favor of eloping with Dimitri and living happily ever after, owning a fancy bookstore/cafe in Paris.
