Liam's life began on a small farming acre, one surrounded by many others just like his. He shared it with his mother and father, a loving couple who raised their boy with nothing short of love and respect for any and all living things. They taught him that, from their neighbours to strangers, right down to the animals they tended to, they all deserved the same kind of genuine care; for a long time, Liam stuck by this belief. He was the sweetest boy, seemingly without a fault, but when a fatal event cut his family down to two, he changed. He began to stray, not understanding how he was supposed to give to others if life was only going to steal from him those he held most dear.
He couldn't handle the pain, packing away who he was in a tiny box, shoved in a far corner of his heart. He left it there where it gathered dust and was soon forgotten, he was no longer the kind boy his father had raised. Liam rebelled, he lashed out, he pushed everyone away. Often Liam would find himself back at the box in his heart, hesitating, wanting to open up, yet he couldn't. He hated himself, but he could not go back to how it was.
One day, when he found himself once again standing in front of that very box, he hesitated like always. Only, this time, he was far older, sixteen and ready to face the forgotten memories. If he was asked what had changed, he could not say specifically, it was everything.
It was around this time, Liam picked up the pieces and greeted old friends. Some of them remained the same, like Mrs. Flores who owned the peach trees. On the other hand, some had changed. One of them being little Maggie Greene, a girl who was once bright and chipper, now a young woman with hatred sewn into her clothes. The pair were complete opposites, and yet, their futures were bound together in ways the two could never have imagined.
But when the end is carved out in stone, upheaved by decaying hands, all they can do is look back on what they had, and knew, with nostalgia in their hearts.
