She and Thomas were too riled up to be able to be with each other, even after he rescued Grace from Kimber. It was a good thing she stayed away, for everyone involved, but mostly for herself. She had finally been able to put the pieces together regarding Kimber's involvement in the death of Billy and Eloise.
She whole-heartedly believed Billy Kimber was the man behind the whole ordeal. All she had to do was tell the Shelbys, and revenge would be hers.
In the meantime, though, she needed to work out the very obviously growing tension between herself and Thomas. They were ticking time bombs when they were together, and their fuses were growing shorter and shorter with each encounter.
Nellie flipped her stove off and pulled the pot of soup from the top, preparing to pour herself a bowl when she heard shouts and a crash come from downstairs. She froze, her eyes widening as she listened intently to what she thought might be a break-in.
Nellie moved quickly, setting the pot on the stove before she grabbed her father's shotgun and approached the top of the stairs. The sounds were too muffled to be coming from her own house, she realized, relief coursing through her veins.
She let her shotgun fall, her eyes closing as she tried to calm the furious beating of her heart. You're okay, she told herself, no one is in the house. You're safe.
Nellie stepped away from the stairway, prepared to put her shotgun away when she was hit by a sudden realization.
If the break-in wasn't happening in her home, then it was happening in the home next to her. The Shelby Home. The place where her entire amount of savings was at...
It didn't take long for Nellie to hurl herself down the stairs and out of her house. She saw a covered carriage outside of the Shelby home but paid no attention to it as she rushed inside. She immediately recognized the men as the Lee brothers, her heart pounding furiously as she peered inside the gambling den.
They were tearing the place apart, stuffing money into their pockets and bags as they did so. Scudboat was sprawled across the floor and Nellie hoped he was only unconscious.
She saw movement in the office and immediately knew what they were doing before they even emerged with Nellie's safe in their hands. Two of the Lee men were struggling with the safe, glee on their faces as they neared the door.
Nellie plastered herself against the wall, her shaking hands clutching her shotgun tightly. She was way outnumbered and outgunned, but she knew the Lee men wouldn't risk the death of one of the brothers, so when she stepped into the doorway, she made sure to press the barrel of her shotgun directly against the skull of Erasmus Lee.
