Chapter Nineteen
Sweet Escape Part Two
Carter's P.O.V.
As I stepped inside, I was barely able to read the letters on the silver plate next to the doorframe.
Dr. Brodeur
Memories unraveled like a film reel inside my head. Where had I heard that name before? Brodeur?
The phone call!
"Mrs. Jones?" He had asked into the phone and paused. "I....uh....I......"
Their had been a mumbled reply on the other end of the line before he once again resumed his ceaseless faltering. After whoever was on the line once again intervened, he had calmed down. "Who, me?" He inquired.
Pause of silence.
"My name is Michael. Michael Brodeur."
I gasped, but kept my thoughts to myself, trying to piece the information I had together. Unfortunately, I was still missing some of the puzzle pieces. However, the inner core of the room was far more intriguing than the name plate, for throughout the room's walls were a plethora of scattered newspaper clippings and pictures of people, Sherlock and Jim were first to be noticed.
My breath hitched at the sight them, and Michael turned around and wrapped his arm around my arm, leading me to a chair after observing my distressful state. He slipped his hand over mine, frowning when I pulled away. "Sorry," he apologized with a nervous laugh. "It's evident you have questions so ask away."
I paused wondering where to start. I began with the first question that came to mind.
"What's with all the pictures and newspaper articles?"
"My research."
"Okay then, why is your last name on the silver plate next to the doorway.?"
"Henry," he began. "Henry Brodeur.......my father, used to work here when I was younger, just coming out of college. As Sebastian told you, the unit was shut down because that Plague could not be well enough contained like we'd hoped to attempt and only contaminated the rest of the hospital. Everyone in this unit was laid off and it was the exact night my dad was packing up his office belongings.
"My mum, Suzy, offered to help him while I waited at the house for them to return. Up until midnight I'd waited, but no one came. I walked here to check up on them only to realize I'd been walking into a trap. Sebastian had kidnapped both my parents and threatened to poison them if I didn't listen and obey his orders."
"I'm.....I'm so sorry."
"It was never part of the plan," he continued. "But if listened and obeyed him on account of my parent's lives on the line."
"How long has it been since you've seen or heard from them?"
".....five years," he croaked.
I gulped, imagining how painful it must be. He wiped away a few tears with his long-sleeves, green coat that matches his eyes. "Anyways.....it turns Sebastian has been keeping secrets."
"What do you mean?"
"My parents are already dead. He killed them off years ago. I just didn't find out until recently when I overheard him talking on the phone to someone about how stupid his precious assistant is for believing his parents were still alive. The point is, I'm going to help you escape."
"What!? But why? If Sebastian discovers that you're a part of it or if we get caught....he'll kill you...."
"That doesn't matter now. Not anymore. I have nothing more to live for. But you gave me a chance to realize that I may not have someTHING, but I sure as hell have someONE to live for. And that's you, Carter Jones. Ever since I met you and learned about you and saw how strong you were, I always had certain feelings and I've come to realize that it doesn't matter if I die, because it'll all be worth it. I can still give you a chance to live and be with the love of your life."
