my first attempt at writing angst- it honestly sucks so bad since it's so short and rushed 😍😍 this was a request from a reader a while back, sorry for the long wait...

he stands at the peak of mount aocang and prays to the gods in the moonlight. 

bring them back...

all he wanted was to see the face of his beloved, who lost to the mutiny that plagued teyvat during the archon war.

when one prays hard with sincerity and purpose, the deities may consider one's request.

a beam of light as luminescent as the sun flickered in the sky, before disappearing. the yaksha hangs his head. 

"xiao. we meet again." 

his eyes widen and he turns around to see the one he longed to see the most.

"i-it's you... y-y/n..." his voice trembles with every word, and he falls to the ground.

tears fall and soak the grass beneath him. "it's been so long... i-i missed you so much."

you kneel down beside him and place a hand on his. he looks up, tears streaking his face.  

cupping his cheek, you lean in and kiss him. "don't cry, my love. i'm here now, aren't i?" 

xiao's eyes meet with yours, and you both smile.

"do you remember how we used to dwell here everyday, xiao? i always loved spending time with you here, you know. it's such a shame that my place as a yaksha didn't last very long... but that's okay. we're together now, right?" you intertwine your fingers with his, leaning on his shoulder and admiring the view from mount aocang. he remained silent, but you knew he was happy.

a bright flash of light and the ivory moon turned red, the same red that everyone saw when you fell under the archon war. rain began to fall and thunder began to roar.

"...i guess this is your sign to leave..." xiao whispers, almost inaudible.

"i...i'm so sorry, xiao. i know you wanted to spend more time with me, but it can't be this way." 

you stand up, and motion him to stand too. 

"i...i believe this is the last time we'll be able to meet again. every year we re-unite at this location, but as of tonight, we've reached the set limit..." tears sting your eyes as you say these words, but you are mentally ready to depart forever. you've long prepared for this moment.

"alatus, my dearest. please continue to look over liyue and its people, just like we once did together as all 5 yakshas. i have trust and faith in you... i... hope to be reunited infinitely when the day comes, and we will spend the rest of our lives together, forever. i love you, xiao."

everything at this moment is silent, cold and sombre. as you begin to fade away, you share one last kiss with him, one that is warm, comforting and brimming with affection. 

"take care, xiao. i will always be waiting for you."

and when he opened his eyes, no one was there. only a single, bright star shining in the sky. 

you had prepared for this moment, you had accepted the fact that you wouldn't see him for a long time, so you were okay. but for xiao, he wasn't ready, but he didn't want to tell you that, seeing you were so happy. 

"i... hope to be reunited infinitely when the day comes"

however, that day will never come. the duty of a yaksha is to serve rex lapis and protect liyue, which will continue to exist until the very end of teyvat's timeline.
