THAT EVENING, THEA stared up at the small television box lodged into the upper corner of the hotel lobby. Faint blue light flashed through the window as police search boats combed through the canals. Water gently rippled in the flooded grooves boxing the corner where her fellow classmates, and Mr. Harrington and Mr. Dell vigorously foraged the Internet and news channels for the identity of the mysterious Green Wizard.
Thea sat cross-legged on a small tattered lounge chair next to Bex who was leaning over Ned's shoulder. The boy's eyebrows were pinched in worry as his laptop screen illuminated his face. Windows of conspiracies, blurred footage, and articles depicting the outrageous attack were overlapped. Even more appealing, the newest player in the game the trio had found themselves playing was making headlines on every news channel they switched to.
"It's aliens— it has to be," Ned insisted, shaking his head.
"He's trending on Twitter," Bex remarked, her eyebrow raised as she scrolled through her phone and idly paced around the lobby.
Thea rolled her eyes as Flash passed through with a hand shoved idly in his pocket. His eyes were glued to his phone screen like several others. "Buzzfeed says there's a sailor named Morris Bench who was exposed to an experimental underwater generator and got hydro-powers."
"Yeah, you should definitely believe everything you read on the Internet," MJ drawled sarcastically from her sitting position on the staircase.
"Spider-Man and Illyris could take them," Flash boasted.
Bex's eyebrows furrowed together in offense at her lack of mention. Though she was relatively new, her rise to fame was boosted by her association with the Mother of Magic who had a global-scale prominence compared to Spider-Man. Bex met Thea's gaze and shrugged as the maegi shook her head reassuringly.
"What do you think it is?" Thea heard Mr. Harrington mutter to Mr. Dell who carefully answered with, "You know, being a man of science... witches. There were two of them there."
Thea's phone buzzed on her lap. She turned it over, her shoulders slumping at Serafina's caller ID flashing furiously in an incoming call. Sighing, she swiped the button and raised it to her ear, switching to Sovrani to evade the ears of everyone else, "Daaryo told you what happened? For someone who's not so chatty, he's a pretty big gossip."
"I'm the Maegya's War Master and your legal guardian, he better have told me." Serafina sounded distressed over the phone and Thea could imagine her pacing around the kitchen island back in Queens.
"What the hell was that thing and who the hell was that flying man?"
"You know as much as everyone else here," Thea answered, her gaze sweeping across the bustling lobby.
