Half across the 99 Caverns, music was everywhere. Mario remembered his mom having a few records in the house when he was a child. There would be music anywhere he would be including after he made his restaurant and kept his business running.
Right now, there was a crowd of people gathering over at one area of the streets. They were making one large circle clear for something, or rather for someone. It was a man in a ridiculous outfit as if he came from a different decade.
"Good evening everyone! I am Mr. Spectacular, ready to present my dazzling performance with the Jumping Jigglers!" Despite the way it sounded, the way it looked gave away the whole idea that it would not be good as the man claimed it to be. The troupe of Slugs itself were not happy and even looked a bit tired. They didn't budge while he started up a simple music box.
Mario almost felt sorry for him, but his attention was almost diverted towards other people in the music business as well.
Two girls were in front of a red curtain though they were the ones putting it up. A blonde elf teenage girl wearing a silk shirt and skirt. The girl that really stood out had brown hair, but she also had fluffy pointy ears that moved like a slug hound's ears would. She also had a brown fluffy tail on her rear as well. She carried a guitar on her back, but she also carried a cooler that had a lock on it.
"Um Lupe, I'm a little concerned about this competition" The elf replied "Willow, it's not lucky to assume the results, remember what tu Abuela talked about with starting street shows?"
"Emily, are you sure he's not trouble" the Wolf girl called Lupe asked. Mario almost questioned himself about this third girl, but Ricochet shook his head at that. Maybe he knew they were making her hidden in order to express the element of surprise. Speaking of surprise, Mr. Spectacular wasn't doing something to fix his performance. He just simply let the music box continue to play while he tried to gather the troupe that keeps moving around.
"She's right, that doesn't look good" Lupe commented from afar "Are you sure you know what you are doing?" "Of course I do," Mr. Spectacular remarked in an angry tone. He kept trying to reform the troupe, but they sure do not like his attitude. "You're not gonna get anywhere acting like that. Let us show you how a performance works" Willow replied back grabbing a wooden stick from her bag. Mario made a clear to see it was really a wooden recorder.
Willow: Ayyy, ladies and gentlemen, the show is right this way. Right this way.
Lupe: Ayyy, we have prepared for you a dazzling display. Right this way.
Willow: So gather 'round my friends.
Lupe: And here we go.
Willow and Lupe: Presenting, the one and only Vivo.
With that, the red carpet being hold by itself went down. Now what he saw next almost gave him a heart attack. The carpet revealed a beautiful tan-skinned teenage girl. She had silk dark blue hair only ending at her shoulders. She wore a zipper-less jacket bearing the coordinated colors of pink, yellow, and blue. She had a bandoleer belt that held also her sweatpants up. The thing that surprises him really was her bright blue eyes, every second he looked at those eyes, he could tell they were glowing for a bit.
She started playing the bongo drums wrapped around her chest. Followed by Willow's recorder, she played both fast and beautifully. This the Emily they were talking to before? She did not only support the looks of Eli, but the way she held her hand for one of the Floppers of Mr. Spectacular that just came over without a second thought to say hello just like he did with wild Slugs. She let it on her shoulder while she kept playing her drums.
Emily: Is this thing on? Gather 'round, gather 'round. Let's go!
Mr. Spectacular let out a loud boo, but no one joined with him. They were only silent with both of them.
Emily: Okay, attendance is low. But this is just a hiccup. Once we begin our show, business is gonna pick up. We're two blocks from la casa, it's not a new scene. Check out our spot in the plaza. Check out the routine. Ladies and Gentlemen, I am Emily the Glamour of Vivo. Oh, what's a Glamour? Oh baby I think that you're ready to learn a thing of two. Watch me swing as I sing to you everything I can think of to make you scream, whoo!
Willow and Lupe: Ayyy, lo le lo lai, lo le lo lai, lo le lo lei. Lai le lo lei.
Emily: Mi amigas, Willow and Lupe. They sing...
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: Ayyy, lo le lo lai, lo le lo lai, lo le lo lei. Lai le lo lei.
Lupe: You and I, we are one of a kind.
Emily and Lupe: Keeping time.
Emily and Willow: Every time.
Emily: Oye! We are a part of time-honored tradition. Of timing and precision. Some finest musicians are top-notch as we hopscotch the competition. The clock is tocking and ticking. I'm rocking to this clave rhythm. Now watch! As people drop their dollars and peso. We do this all day, everyday, so dame un beso, give me a kiss. Mwah! Be right back, now watch this.
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: Hey, lo le lo lai, lo le lo lai, lo le lo lei. Lai le lo lei. You and I are one of a kind. Keeping time every time.
Emily: Ok, you maybe thinking, what's a girl like you playing music without parents? Well, I lived in the Grand Forest. Baby, I got lost in the city as a child while on a hunt, I was somewhere new, I wasn't singing the same chorus. All I remembered was running away hungry from someone even hungrier chasing me up to one important tree. But guess who came to the rescue with her tres.
Willow: Mi madre!
Emily: Yes, and she blessed me with this melody.
Yes, Emily remembered well. When Oakley Carvallo found Emily that day 9 years ago, it was mother instinct to take her back to their house/workplace. La Gala was still new at the time, and the kids were not old enough to work yet. Even when Abuela Martina wasn't sure of adopting Emily at first, Oakley did not leave her at the Refuge Orphanage.
Oakley: Where did you come from, chicitita? Oh, you really love this music, don't you? Come down from the tree, you can stay with me. But would you like to be?
Emily took no restraint and just made one small drum solo. Her hands felt the fabric of the instrument and felt the rhythm guide her. Basically everyone in the room watched her reveal how much of a prodigy she was with the drums.
Oakley: Ah, you are so full of music and life and I know what our band name would be...VIVO!
Emily: And if y'all like that, would you pass the hat? Right along like that, would you pass the hat? Yeah, if y'all like that, would you pass the hat? It's Emily, I'm faster than your average cat.
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: And if y'all like that, would you pass the hat? Right along like that, would you pass the hat? Yeah, if y'all like that, would you pass the hat?
Emily: Yeah, I've adapted to my habitat.
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: You and I, we are one of a kind.
Lupe: Keeping time.
Emily: Keeping time.
Willow: Right on time.
Emily: Right on time.
Audience: And we all like that, so we pass the hat. Right along that, so we pass the hat. Yeah, We all like that, so we pass the hat. Right along like that, so we pass the hat. Whoo!
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: You and I, we are one of a kind.
Audience: They are one of a kind.
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: Keeping time, every time. Right on time.
Audience: Right on time. Lai lo lei lo lai lo lei lo le lo le lo lai!
Emily, Lupe, and Willow: Right on time.
With that, the audience clapped and cheered even bringing out more coins to fill the hat. The girls smiled and made many thanks to them. Mario and Ricochet only watched them from afar, sharing both positive and doubts about this group.
"Why do I have a feeling that the Emily girl being not who she thinks she is?"
