JULIETTE
Papers were scattered all over the floor. It honestly looked like a crime scene if I was to be honest.
I was scrambling through my brain, trying to figure out what I could've possibly missed during each of the autopsies I've done.
I didn't have proper training as some would say. My mentor did a poor job at teaching me something worth my time. I hated the fact that I pretty much taught myself during all those hours spent with my mentor.
He was careless, a hypocrite, and a lazy man. I still don't know how he became a forensic doctor, but I reassured myself by saying I was nothing like him.
I was a hardworking woman who fought for her place in that field even if many people criticized me along the way.
I proved them all wrong when I walked on that stage and claimed my degree that I gained with all my sweat and tears.
But, I was beginning to wonder if my lack of training was another bump on the road with that complicated case that I was part of.
I rubbed my forehead and sighed in frustration. My stomach made a weird noise and I remembered that I forgot to eat dinner.
If Hayden was here, he would've reminded me to take care of myself and stop neglecting my basic needs.
I got up from the floor and grabbed my keys and coat. A nice little treat was well earned after all those hours of thinking.
I drove towards the little dinner where Hayden and I always go. They serve the best waffles and it's exactly what I needed right now.
I walked into the restaurant and ordered my waffles to take out. When it was ready, I walked out and took my car keys out of my purse.
As I was unlocking the car door, I saw a dark silhouette moving through the darkness in the alley just in front of me. I squinted my eyes and I only saw the figure of a woman looking at her phone.
Only a second later, another shadow moved through the dark and grabbed the woman from behind. I gasped when I saw her head fly back and the stranger's hand around her throat.
The woman screamed and I froze as I tried to process what was happening. I just kept looking at the scene without doing anything.
I could only assume it was a man because of his body shape, but I was too far away to confirm my suspicions. My body began to move again when I tried to get inside my car rapidly.
I fumbled with my car keys and rattled the door handle. The reflection of something shiny caught my attention as I tried to get away from there as fast as I could.
I could've sworn the man looked at me dead in the eyes as he slit the woman's throat and let her body fall on the ground like she was nothing.
I finally opened the door and locked my car after getting inside of it. I started the engines and sped off in a panic.
I was disoriented, I didn't know where I was going anymore. I wiped my cheeks and wet tears stained them.
I didn't know why I was crying, it must have been the shock of witnessing all of that. But I'm a forensic doctor, I should be able to handle those things without panicking.
