°Betrayal is one sharp knife °
“How- how did you convince the whole board to sell you their shares?”
Thando asked her fiancé, realising that the math just wasn’t working. Adam’s smile slowly faded from the face she learned to love after months of trying to persuading herself that not doing so was better for her life. She might have been right.
“I can explain- I.” Thando slowly backed away from Adam trying to lift her then heavy feet to her mother who was less than five steps away.
She felt something sting her left cheek. It felt as though the music had stopped and all the dimmed lights turned to spotlights –exposing her shame.
“It must be true that love is blind otherwise I must have an idiot for a daughter- that’s me putting it lightly.”
“I did not know ma. Do you think I would give away grandma’s gift?”
“You tell me Thando, is this why you decided to study in Cape Town? Do you hate me so much for the marriage that you’d give away the inheritance you received from the person who loved you the most- the person who you claim to have loved the most!”
“Did you sell them, is that how you were going to pay for your tuition - through betraying your own flesh and blood?”
Her tears rushed down her cheeks. Did she honestly not know what happened? How could her mother even accuse her of such a thing? Thando could never betray the Fords at least not willingly –even if they forced her into getting engaged with Adam, she knew that some things were not to be tried let alone be done. Their marriage was a business deal, they all knew that but were all clauses fully understood by both sides? Thando left the museum, her heels were grabbing the wrong kind of attention now. She could not believe what she saw with her own eyes –heck she did not want to believe it.
“Adam did not love me, he couldn’t have.” She said, tears blurring her vision.
“My shares were the transaction.”
She decided. “The constant questions about my board members, the value of my shares.”
Thando stopped dead in her tracks. “No.” She remembered something important. Something that incriminated her. She finally heard her phone ring after minutes of staying in her head.
“Papa?” “Stay in here.” Her father’s harsh voice said but innocent Thando was all but aware that he was kicking her out of her home. Even if she understood what he was saying she would have thought that he only wanted to keep her there until everything cooled off.
“I’ll fix it.”
“I’m not interested in that. Once you get home pack up and leave for this –you chose it, didn’t you?”
It felt as though Thando’s heart had stopped beating. Was it finally happening? Was he finally disowning her like he had promised?
“He did anyway.”
The tears started falling more and more, her heart started beating faster, her chest feeling heavy with each passing second. With that Thando lost consciousness and before she could even reach the ground a car flung her onto to the other side of the road.
Thando was on the floor unconscious slowly losing consciousness.
“What can happen should happen.” She whispered, closing her eyes.
The car that hit her drove back in reverse, the man in it praying that the young woman was only alive. Even if she survived it some serious damage could still be inflicted- she could be paralysed or worse be in a coma.
“Are you okay?” Seeing blood he panicked, calling for help from the security that was around. He had to remember however that if she was indeed dead then he was implicating himself, he was possibly witnesses onto the scene and his reputation did not need this. His reputation did not need him facing a criminal charge if not multiple criminal charges. Besides he had new responsibilities to take care of and this damn girl had to stand in his way and prevent him from living the life that had finally begun. She was preventing him from new life he had received that very night that she possibly lost hers. Rebecca would not forgive him for this one.
With that thought he took Thando to Emmarentia academic hospital.
(Dun, dun, dun. Was that exciting or what?
