Tris' POV:
There. I've just given myself to Dauntless, leaving my parents behind. I hope I can manage to fit in, considering I'm divergent.
I can't believe my brother Caleb joined those elitist know-it-alls that we call Erudite. What is wrong with him? I think to myself. Joining the elitist know-it-alls that we were raised to hate by Abnegation. Despite this, I mustn't let this ruin my new found freedom.
I'm cheered on by a fifth of the people in the auditorium. They are wearing black leather, and several piercings or tattoos, apart from those of us who have just joined, of course. There also appears to be Dauntless-born people re-signing up. In total, I think there are nine transfers to Dauntless. there are five Candor transfers, three Erudite transfers, and one Abnegation transfer-Me. Amity don't have any transfers, which doesn't surprise me. Imagine transferring from telling someone to be happy, to punching them in the face!
I mean, all I've seen dauntless do is run everywhere, shouting and climbing up structures to jump on trains- as they are moving. But I think you can get a pretty good idea that that's not all they do.
Which is what I'm about to do. At the end of the choosing ceremony, I find myself running with my new faction out of the building and into the open air, screaming wildly with the rush of adrenaline and euphoria.
Then, I see Dauntless members climb up the structures that support the above-ground railway, a train coming for us. So I start to climb, carefully placing my feet and trying not to look down. I speed up so as not to miss the train. Once I get up onto the platform, I start running ahead of the train with everyone. As soon as the train catches up, someone kicks open the door, jumping inside and hauling us up. I reach for his callused hand and just manage to grab onto it, pulling me into the carriage with the other initiates and members.
A rather well-built transfer from Candor snorts and jibes "A stiff? In Dauntless! I expect that even a punch would be too selfish-"
"Hey, she's not Abnegation anymore, is she? And neither are you Candor, so I suggest you keep your mouth shut, though old habits die hard" says the owner of the hands that pulled me on here, making everyone snigger.
"Thanks" I reply, giving him a feeble smile. At first he stared at me, but then he smirked, a satisfied glint in his eyes.
"alright everyone" he suddenly shouts. "My name is Eric. I am a leader here at Dauntless and I will be your instructor for the next few weeks. As you can see, we are about to arrive at Dauntless HQ, where you will learn to be one of us" funny, how he speaks monotone throughout, like he's done this too many times before. Well, he probably has.
"well, what're you all waiting for? Jump!"
Oh. We're here. I guess this is where I either live or die. So, I jump.
