Simon was obviously plagued with guilt.
'Was it something I said?'
'No, I think I just hate that word.'
'Di-'
'Yeah, the ten cent word.' Mel cut Simon off shockingly quickly.
Simon decided to leave Mel, for the time being.
There was a knock on the arcade door, even though it was made of glass. A basic human act of courtesy, no matter the situation, was to knock.
There was a teenager dressed in winter wear.
'Hey, it's freezing! Mind letting me in?' he bleated.
Nate jumped back. He was wary of outsiders.
Dyna pulled the glass door to the side. Mel played along, perhaps this stranger could be trusted.
'Thanks for letting me in. I'm Chris!' He extended his hand to Mel, who instinctively placed their palm on his, an action they picked up from Simon whenever he attempted to be friendly.
Chris was a timid person, but he warmed up to his kind hosts. He brought in chocolate powder, which Dyna stirred into boiled milk to make a drink.
'Here, take this hot chocolate,' Dyna insisted, handing Mel a cup of the brown beverage.
Hot chocolate. Chocolate that is hot.
Mel took a sip, and the sweetness was overwhelming. Mel enjoyed the way it melted on the tongue and felt warm when swallowed, and began to drink mouthful after mouthful, taking in the warmth.
Chris stayed for a couple hours, chatting about life with Simon and Dyna. Anecdotes of hilariously relatable scenarios, and the time Chris got rammed by a reindeer.
Everything was normal, up until he left. He looked Nate dead in the eyes, and left without a word.
That... was odd, but nothing of concern. Right?
