I hear her scream. I leap up and saw she was falling out of the window. Literally, crimson hair whipping in the wind. Her foster parents glare at both of us. I think her name was Rachel, who had her hand outstretched to empty air. But getting back to Rose, of all the stupid things - did she really have to be so dramatic and jump out the window? I mean I told her to wait...
I dove for her. She barely touched the ground, her innocent grey eyes stare back at me. "Rosalina, you're so stupid, you know that? Were you trying to get yourself killed?" She dusts herself off, jumping out of my arms. I check for bruises as she throws back her head in a humorous laugh. "You're joking, right? I knew you were going to catch me." She really shouldn't depend on me so much. What if, god forbid, I wasn't there to catch her? Or if I heard her scream too late. "Come on, R. We have to go." Her red hair bounces as she leans on me, fixing her shoes.
I stare at her. She shoves me playfully, a bag on her shoulder. She smiles at my worried expression. "Let's go." She says gently. I grab the bag from her shoulder and shove it at the foot of the passenger seat. I open the door and sarcastically say, "After you." She smirks at me and ducks her head inside." The red coating of the Mercedes gleams as I run across to take my seat. The great thing about this car is that it's keyless. So I don't have to waste time jamming the key in the ignition, all I have to do is press a button to -
"R, what are waiting for? They're coming!" Her wide eyes show me a glimpse of her fear and I really want to laugh. "Oh, they've seen nothing yet. Buckle up, Rose." So I wanted to show off. That didn't mean anything, I reverse the car and it jolts. "Careful!" Rosalina hisses through her teeth. I can't help myself. I laugh despite the situation. "Live a little." I say. I never felt so carefree in my life. I stamp my foot on the accelerator and we miss their white dirty Lincoln by just a smitch.
We're so lucky. "Give her back, you buffoon. I'll call the police on you!" Yells Steven in the background. They would never catch us. I'm driving too fast."Good luck with that!" I yell, provoking him a bit. Rosalina hits my head. "Ow!" I say playfully, even though it really didn't hurt. "And that was for...?" She glares at me. I'm trying to save her life here! "You don't know Steven. He could get really worked up." She says and I shrug my shoulders nonchalantly.
We reach the interstate and Rosalina keeps looking behind her shoulder. "What's wrong?" I ask, the smiling fading from my lips. "They're still behind us." She says, fixing the sunglasses on her head. "What? Still?" Now I look. The stupid white unmistakable Lincoln is right behind us. Steven is giving us a smug look. I bang my fists on the steering wheel and curse. "We have to lose them." Rosalina states. "It's the only way." I curse again. "I know that." I say, throwing daggers in their direction.
I dig my foot in the accelerator. Right now, I bet everyone is thinking I'm drunk because I'm driving so fast like a maniac. I admire the fact I could keep the car in control at ninety miles per an hour. I love this baby. So freaking much.
I hit a sharp turn and continue to past street after street, trying to find the right one. I steer clear finding the crossroad. I smirk, turning right. They should have the worst luck trying to find the right one.
...
I realize, as I'm driving, that this must be traumatizing for her. I mean, if she hadn't met me, then she'd be at home. Safe. Well if she still didn't have that ability then she would be safe. Otherwise, she's be dead. I shake my head, trying to clear my thoughts. I pull over at the side of the road. It's dark, the full moon at it's peak. I walk across and grab a blanket from the trunk and throw it over her. Wait, full moon?
I groan, trying my damnest to retract my fangs. I sink to my knees, turning away from her. I'm fighting the urge to Turn. Not in front of her, I thought silently. I shovel some dirt in my mouth and gag. I can't - no I must. She can't see me like this. It's my secret to keep, I beg silenlty. A clould covers the moon, giving me enough time to spit out some of the dirt. Spitting and gagging, I crawl towards the driver's seat. "R?" Rosalina calls out. No! She can't see me like this, I blink my eyes rapidly, trying to stop it from turnng red. "R, where are you?" She calls out. No...
"Go back to sleep." I rasp, coughing out the dirt. I can't drink from her. She's my friend and she's human. I cannot. She tossed and turned. Finally, she pulled off the blanket. "I'm driving." She says. She looks over to me. "R, are you okay?" I manage a grimace. "Just...fine. But, no. You can't drive." Rosalina shakes her head. "I can't sleep, and you must be tired." Wildly, I shake my head.
I protest under my breath. "Rosalina, you don't have to - "
"This isn't up for debate. I'm driving. And besides, you can barely walk. I'll drive, get some rest." She says, already buckled in the driver's seat. And here I thought that would be me telling her. As soon as she started the ignition, I made it to the passenger's seat and got in. I am grateful that she is driving and not me. My eyes slowly drifts shut and I seeped into dreamland.
