It's a short answer but I thought this would be a good place to start! I've seen the community evolve over time but to me at it's core the aesthetic is an inclusive place for people of any gender, sexuality, ethnicity, or size to get together and meet individuals with similar interests and styles, generally inspired by popular media like lolita and other coquette type movies like buffalo 66 and leon the professional and singers like lana del rey specifically in her lizzy grant era. The aesthetic generally leans femme and vintage in my experience but there are plenty of alternative n more masc coquettes who are just as big a part of the community.

What your key inspirations are may vary from person to person! Most people may not even fit perfectly into one of the subtypes like grunge, angelic, classic etc. So IMO do whatever you're drawn to, coquette is an arura and a way of expression. As long as you're being safe, kind, and having fun you can't do it wrong <3
Personally, the coquette-like character I relate to the most is audrey from twin peaks, and I take heavy inspo from classic and angelic coquette styles and old Hollywood, while also really enjoying alternative rock, morute, and a vintage horror aesthetic.
