Tanjiro sat in front of renegoku, begging the hashira to stay alive. your ears could hear the please and begs of the boy echoing across the train wreck. gathering whatever strength you had left, you sprinted towards the orange haired man, your body feeling more and more weak.
Everything blurred in your path as your aching legs wobbled with each step, seconds away from collapsing. the familiar metallic taste once again flooded your mouth as your earlier wound began to open up again, but that didn't stop your movements.
"KYOJURO!" you screamed, both of your hands gripping your side where a dark red stain began to show. Renegoku turned his head towards you, his eyes widening in surprise as you came sliding right in front of him. Tanjiro had already gotten up, trying to find a way to stop akaza from leaving.
"Y/n you shouldn't be running! You need to be healing-" "I need to be healing? KYO DONT GIVE ME THAT BULLSHIT. Fuck fuck fuck start doing a breathing technique or something, just please don't die on me." your voice gave a painful crack near the end. A large whole was left in his abdomen, a fatal wound.
Your mind knew he couldn't be saved yet your heart kept sputtering out words to try and change that. "Y/n you know i cant be healed." Renegoku raised his hand from his side, slowly bringing it to cup your face. a gentle smile stayed on his lips, the smile he would give whenever he's trying to calm you down.
"y-you have to be able to heal! i, i cant lose you!" you cried, gripping his wrist with both hands. a messy stream of tears cleaned the dirt off your face. renegokus thumb slowly wiped away at them, his calloused hand brining you slight comfort.
"sunshine im going to have to leave you now, there's no other way to avoid it. so let's make a final promise ok? you become the strongest hashira there is. set your heart ablaze and keep fighting. i love you so much y/n." his warm orange eye softened at the very last words.
using the last bits of his strength, kyojuro pulled you in for a final kiss, his one hand cupping your jaw and tilting it to the side. "i love you too" you cried in between kisses, a suffocating feeling filling your chest. pulling away from eachother renegokus eye slowly became more hazed and dilated, he no longer looked at you but behind you.
"we'll always be together, no matter where i am." he looked back at you. Your lip quivered, a lump forming in your throat.
"together forever?"

the sunrise illuminated the scene, giving it a non welcoming glow. your upper body slid down onto your knees. your hands, which still gripped renegokus cold one, tremored uncontrollably. big heavy sobs racked your body, your lungs feeling as if they might explode from the limited air.
screams echoed from your throat as the pain of losing the love of your life made its way throughout your body. tanjiro and the others could only cry along with you, knowing they did nothing to help save him.
the vivid memories you shared with him raced through your mind: the little gifs he would bring after every mission, his hands skillfully braiding your hair, his sleepy eyes waking up with you. it was all too much for your heart. you lost your soulmate. the one person who was your everything.
it took everything in you to not end your own life right there and then, with the hopes of seeing him once more. the rumbling of footsteps came close towards you followed by murmured shouts and whisperes. people tried pulling you away from renegokus body, but failed as you kept a death grip onto his pale hand.
when medics finally put your shivering body onto the stretched, a strange numbness overtook you. your mind felt as if it were underwater. people asked you questions and all you could respond with was a simple nod of the head. your emotionless eyes staring up at the blue sky.
why did he have to go?
