Nick Shepard
The shop is buzzing with teenagers all laughing and talking about the next race that I scheduled for next weekend. It's farther out of San Francisco so we wouldn't risk being shut down by cops again. I think this one will be a good one. My son is already claiming that he's gonna win it. I have faith in him. I'm always proud whenever he shows interests in racing like how I was when I was his age.
My son and his friends are all sitting down in the seating area with bud lights in their hands. Jace has his arm wrapped around a red head that I've never seen before. Weird. I thought he had a thing for Andy. That's why I felt like shit when her and I....
I shake off the memory and go back to adjusting my sons car. Adding another tank of NOS in the hood of his car and connecting the wires, winding it up so that it reaches the small button next to the gas pedal. Easy access for when he needs to use it.
The sound of the bell at the front door ringing grabs my attention. A small part of me wants it to be Andy but when I turn around to just see my best friend, Cameron, walking in, I sigh in disappointment. I haven't seen or heard from Andy in a week. There's really no reason for us to keep in contact because she was only around because I was fixing her car, but I was just getting use to her. Then I fucked it all up because my fucking dick didn't know when to stay down.
Cameron walks over to me wearing his clean cut three piece suite with a watch on his wrist that looks more expensive then my entire shop. Him and I go way back to high school. We use to race and fix cars together. And with his black hair and green eyes and my chiseled features and blue eyes, we were the ultimate chick magnets. Years later and now he's the president of a law firm up in San Jose with his brother. Connor being a business lawyer and his brother being a family lawyer.
"Hey man." He greets me with a pat on the shoulder. I greet him back the same way and I close the hood of Jace's car and grab a rag to wipe off my hands.
"What brings you here?" I ask wiping my hands and him fixing his cufflinks. Cameron just shrugs while eyeing the entire area.
"Just wanted to stop by. I haven't seen you in a while." I laugh at that because it has been a while. Almost a year in fact. I mean we call here and there but with his schedule and my priority on planning races, we just never had time to sit back and catch up.
"Yeah, it's been a while." I throw the rag back on the table and cross my arms. "You gonna stay long enough to watch the race?"
He grins, shoving his hands in my pant pockets.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world, Nick. I haven't been to a race since college."
I offer him a bear in which he nods and I hand him a cooler while I grab one for myself.
"How's Sarah?" I ask referring to his girlfriend while I take a sip of my beer.
He winces nearly chugging half the bottle down. "Yeah that ship sailed a long time ago, buddy."
I tilt my head in confusion. I thought they were doing good? Cameron must see the look on my face because he just shrugs and takes another sip before speaking.
"I got bored."
Of course he did.
"Well that's too mad. I liked her." I smirk.
