Leliel, the 12th Angel, is described as an "Angel with a black hole-like shadow body that exists in higher dimensions". I would like to take a look at that from a scientific standpoint, as well as explian my own ideas concerning what happened to Shinji inside the "black hole".
First of all, what is a black hole? It is a giant structure with immense gravity. They usually form when a star collapses under its own pressure. It's the same mass as the star, but way smaller, making it more dense. Einstein says, through his general theory of relativity, that time passes more slowly near a black hole, something I will explain shortly in just a second.
Another interesting thing I noticed is how these "higher dimensions" are shown during the "attack". We could see that there is the main body, a shadow lurking on the ground, absorbing everything it gets near to and a "shadow", a black sphere floating in the air. Here is where things get complicated. Humans can only perceive 3 dimensions, those being length, width and height. However, we can only imagine how structures would look in a dimension higher than 3. A sphere in the 4th dimension, for example, is called an n-sphere and it is quite interesting.
In mathematics, an n-sphere is a topological space that is homeomorphic to a standard n-sphere, which is the set of points in (n + 1)-dimensional Euclidean space that are situated at a constant distance r from a fixed point, called the center. It is the generalization of an ordinary sphere in the ordinary three-dimensional space. The "radius" of a sphere is the constant distance of its points to the center. How would an n-sphere look in our perception of the Universe? These are 3 different ways to think of the 4th dimensional sphere. Although different, these are all correct images. The truth lies in a combination of all three concepts.
In Neon Genesis Evangelion, we are shown the third one. A sphere in 3D plus a 2D circle on the ground.
