Captain was breathing heavily as he locked the door, memories flooding over him. Someone knocked on the door, obviously wanting to check up on him. It was probably Dum.
"Captain? Let me in." The indistinct voice sounded.
"I can't." Captain's voice broke. He wanted to pretend, but he couldn't. He was falling apart and he didn't want any of his 'friends' to see him like this.
"Fine. If you won't let me in, I'll let myself in." The voice said stubbornly. Captain couldn't do anything as the door slowly opened.
It was... Veteran? Captain momentarily replaced his feeling of utter hopelessness and pain with one of shock and confusion.
"What are you doing here? You should be out there hating me like the rest of them." Captain muttered, wiping his eyes slightly.
"Dude. No-one here hates you. Where'd you even get that idea?" Veteran said not totally unkindly.
"Gee, I don't know. Did you SEE the way Mr. Cheese was looking at me? The others looked at me like I was a monster...and maybe I am. This is all my fault." Captain's voice broke once more.
To his surprise, Veteran gave him a small quick hug, and looked at him seriously and with seemingly more understanding and kindness when he pulled away.
"Just tell me what happened that day. It'll make you feel better." Veteran prompted, scooting a bit closer so that he could put a comforting arm around Captain.
"You'll hate me when the story's over." Captain warned. He decided to tell the story anyway. After all, it was basically tradition. If someone asked, usually a story would come out one way or another. Usually not of a time as long ago as the zombie virus had been, but still. Captain opened his mouth and began the story.
---------------------------------------
2 Days before the Zombie Virus.
Player had lost once again, and was feeling pretty bummed about it. Veteran hadn't been there for once, and Captain felt sad to see his bestie looking so down. Deciding to go and cheer him up, Captain went over to where Player was moping.
"Heya bestie!" Captain greeted, trying to be upbeat so that Player would possibly feel a bit better.
"I'm not in the mood, Captain." Player growled.
Slightly taken aback, Captain tried again to cheer Player up. He wasn't about to give up! After all, what kind of friend would he be if he just left his bestie to feel sad!
"That was some of the finest imposter work I've ever seen! Sad that-" Captain was interrupted by Player.
"I said that I'm not in the mood, Captain! God, you can't ever do anything right! Not even something as simple as just leaving me alone!" Player shouted.
Stunned, Captain froze as Player stormed away. Captain felt a spark of hurt and anger that he'd never felt before towards Player ignite deep within him. Clenching his fists, he tried to ignore it like he had a few times in the past, but this time, it wouldn't go away.
