"Why exactly are you doing this?" I ask cautiously.
"What?Why wouldn't I?"
"Perhaps because I am your enemy."
I suggest simply, as if the answer couldn't be more obvious. He, clearly, doesn't agree.
"Enemy? What did I-... Oh,"
He looks away, as if even the thought is painful."look I'm sorry that I got you found, but if you hadn't been sneaking around I wouldn't have even thought to question you! Besides at the time I didn't even know that you were the girl we were sent after!" Cat Boy pleads.
Annoyed at the answer I look at him accusingly " How could you not have known?" I hiss as I see him ready to jump at some vile excuse that he has concocted. "The Temari girl even pointed it out! and you didn't question her observation." I quickly add in low vicious growl.
Steadily, I attempt to get my breath back. - Why is this affecting me so much? He is just like everyone else, a shinobi. He's probably been sent by his Kage to lull me into a false sense of security.-
"...I know it was a dumb thing to do... but I didn't want to look like a fool. so I pretended that I had figured it out too." He says looking straight into my eyes.
Hastily I look away, determination welling up inside me. -I refuse to fall to such a low trick.- Almost immediately after I think this I hear footsteps coming down the tunnel and with regret I look down at my partially dry skirt, clearly the boy would not be able to hold me out of the water when the new guard arrives. Suddenly I realise something; -what if this new guard is here to replace Kankuro?- as I begin to panic I am made aware, quite regrettably, that I have already been caught in his trick.... and yet..I still can't help feeling a little sad that he will be going soon.
"Kankuro!" The guard greets the boy enthusiastically, so naturally I assume they have met before - but Kankuro, I mean Cat Boy- I correct myself, recalling my earlier resolve- didn't seem to know who the previous guard was talking about when he mentioned the new girl.-
"Rei? Your the new recruit? I thought that kid had pick up the wrong name!" Kankuro asks, clearly as astonished as I am, but for quite different reasons.
Looking at her you can tell that she (or her family) aren't from Suna, for one thing her long wavy orange hair, which tumbles elegantly over her shoulders, along with her pale skin and glistening Amber eyes are far from the common Suna's.
Secondly; her posture might suggest that she is of fairly high standing, however that could be me overestimating her, though I doubt I'm wrong.
"Oh, Kankuro! It's been so long, I didn't believe him when he said I'd be working with you!" She says as she throws herself at him in a passionate embrace. Of course you didn't, I think bitterly to myself.
Kankuro seems to have also noticed the girls less than subtle hints so instead of returning her hug he awkwardly untangled himself from her.
"Mmm," he agrees, "I didn't really expect it either. Oh, but you know we aren't really supposed to talk, Kage's orders. He says that this one's so clever she'd be able to get information about Suna from barely anything." I smile slightly to myself as I listen to his foolish excuse subtly mingled with compliments.
"Oh." Rei says, the disappointment raw in her voice.
Kankuro left after a while, I resorted to trying to catch the damn leeches before they got to my legs, and this was for fun...
Not too long afterwards he comes back, holding random pieces of wood that look as though they should fit together.
"Here," he says as he passes them one by one between the rusty bars "fit 'em together and hey should make a stand tall enough to get you out of the water." I slowly take them, my gratitude expressed in my glance, any verbal communication would be impractical.
"Hey, Kankuro! What are you doing? If talking is forbidden then I'm guessing this is." Rei exclaims in disbelief.
"Well, he didn't specify that she had to be in the water. He just said she had gone in the cell."
"And what do you expect to do when she use them as weapons?" The girl argues.
Kankuro looks stunned.
"You are joking, planks of wood, for weapons? We have actual weapons." He reminds her in disbelief.
Hours go by as I wait for absolutely nothing to happen. Suddenly, and without warning, the walls begin to tremble and rocks that are easily as big as me dislodge themselves from the walls.
"What's going on?!" Rei demands.
Kankuro is seemingly frozen in shock. Rei gets up, looking around her eyes widen in fear.
"Kankuro! We need to get out of here, come on." She gets up and grabs his arm. Pulling him to his feet she heads down the tunnel just in time to get past one of the worse effected parts of the tunnel. After crawling through a tiny gap in one of the blockages she turns back and calls for Kankuro to get a move on.
I open my mouth to call out for one of them to help me, or at least throw me a key, then I pause. They have no reason to help me, in fact it would benefit them greatly if I died in these circumstances. I look up, determined to watch as they run away. At least in the Shadow Guard the shinobi were taught never to abandon anyone.
"Oh, ugh... I won't fit through that, you go on! I'll go the other way." I look at the hole, don't be ridiculous there's no way he couldn't fit.
"What?" Rei asks. "Of course you can stop being an idiot!" She holds her hand out to him but he backs up and cals to her to let er know that the other way is also clear, she cusses and runs off once she sees him start down the other tunnel. I turn to look at Kankuro. Surely I could convince him to help me.
"Hey, Cat Boy. Can you-" before I finish I realise that he was already coming back for me. He soon has me out and standing but as we start to run down the passage it becomes obvious that I am too weak to continue.
"Thanks for this Cat Boy, but I think I'm going to have to find my own way out of this one. You go on ahead." He looks undecided for a while but eventually sighs and sits next to me. Unstrapping a box from his back he takes out a puppet and opens up the front of it.
"Well? Get in. I'll reenforce the sides with chakra so that it can withstand the weight and we'll wait until Gaara comes, as you saw he can control the sand so when they realise that I haven't come out Rei will tell my father, and even he isn't heartless enough to abandon me. Temari will get him to send Gaara to clear the tunnels." I glance inside the puppet and am surprised, there is enough room for two small people to fit. We climb inside and begin our long and tedious wait.
Looking through the slits in the wood I watch as the corridor caves in. Will this thing really be able to save us? And will that monstrous boy really care enough to help? I doubt it. We both sit in silence as we watch the dust build its way to our only source of light... and soon, the light is gone.
