Trigger Warnings - Blood

Quatervios - crossroad or critical decision in one's life

Rune knew that looking back was a bad idea. She had been taught her entire life not to take such a risk, but she couldn't stop herself as her head began to turn. A quick glance was all she needed but a millisecond was plenty enough time for fate to have their fun. The ground that had been there just a second before opened up under Rune's feet. Before she even had time to process what was happening, Rune found herself falling. The walls (or was it the sky?) passed by her eyes in whirlwinds of color. Blue and purple and red streaks flew across her vision.

The girl screamed as she fell, but the scream turned into a laugh on the lips of fate. A whisper tricked into her ear, barely audible over the sound of wind rushing by her head. So faint Rune couldn't tell if it was even real. You think you can try to hurt us and nothing will happen? , the voice breathed, Get ready sweetheart, because do we have a plan for you. And Rune's fall abruptly stopped as the ground reappeared beneath her.

Sam knew his life was a good one. He had good friends, a good home, and a good job. He and his best friends took care of each other, for an excess of family was not something any of them had. He lived in a large underground compound that he built himself. And he worked as the Warden in what the others in L'Manburg called Pandora's Vault. It was a huge prison with only one objective: keep the Prisoner in.

The single prisoner was enough to take over Sam's life, but he was fine with that. The Prisoner gave his life meaning, gave it purpose. Sam was content with watching his single ward; but his friends kept insisting interaction with others was a requirement for sentient beings (which Sam was most definitely one). He needed to escape this place for just a little while.

As if on cue, Sam's phone started buzzing. He let it vibrate a couple times before sighing and picking it up. Sam smiled at the caller Id and answered the phone.

"Hi Sam!",  the voice shouted.

"Hi Tubbo," Sam responded, wincing slightly at his friend's volume, "how's Michael?"

"Ranboo is taking him to Tommy's for the day and he won't let me come! He says I need a break but this house is boring with no one to talk to. Can you come keep me company?"

"Sure Tubbo. I need to come into town anywa-", Sam starts and then cuts off. A warning buzzer comes on next to him. That's odd, Sam thinks to himself, I'm not expecting any visitors today. Unless they were visiting the Prisoner, no one came by the prison if they could help it. There were many other ways to get around the city and most said Pandora's Vault gave off "bad vibes".

Sam was fine with this, less to worry about. But he still had to check every time this buzzer went off.

Sighing, Sam asked his friend to hold on for just a second. Tubbo, however impatient he may seem, was willing to wait. Sam turned to his main monitor and opened the security camera feed.

"Tubbo, I'm gonna have to call you back."

"But Sam, what abou-", Tubbo questioned as Sam hung up the phone.

Sam grabbed his cloak and mask and threw them on as he rushed down the twisted passageways of the prison. The labyrinth of a building would keep anyone from finding their way out. Right now, Sam used hidden hallways and doors to traverse the huge compound faster. Less than a minute later, Sam stepped outside his prison.

He rushed over to the side where he saw... something. Sam wasn't quite sure what he was going to find. But whatever he was expecting, it wasn't this. A young girl lay before him, bleeding and broken. Even from this angle, Sam could tell she was covered in large gashes. He reached towards the stranger but pulled away when the figure moved. But the figure stilled and Sam reached again.

He turned the girl onto her back and gasped. She must have more blood on her than in her. Sam grabbed a small vial out of his pocket and broke it on the ground next to her face. Red smoke poured from the shattered glass. It twisted and turned in an unnatural way, curling itself around the young girl's injuries. Sam watched, holding his breath, as the girl's wounds started to close.

The red smoke disappeared far too quickly, but the girl did look better. Sam knew he couldn't move the girl too far, she was already so weak, so he picked the girl up bridal style and began to carefully carry her towards the prison. She unconsciously groaned in pain and Sam winced at the sound.

Even though he knew she couldn't hear him, Sam began to whisper to the girl, "It's okay. You're gonna be okay. Don't give up on me. You can get through this," and more. All the way to the prison's infirmary Sam spoke to the girl, comforting her comatose body. The girl whimpered as Sam placed her on a bed. He began to clean and wrap what wounds were left. He wanted to give the girl more healing vials but he knew how much energy those took from a person. The girl was weak, and would need to conserve energy to heal. One vial could save your life, one to many could take it.

Once he was done wrapping the wounds, Sam watched anxiously as the girl's chest began to rise and fall, settling into a burdened rhythm. He would have stayed longer, but the dreaded warning buzzer went off again. Sam knew he had done all he could, so he wrote a quick note for the girl in case she woke up, and headed back to his control room.

The warning buzzer directed his attention to the figure at the front door. Sam recognized the figure and immediately heard down to let his friend in. Once in the front lobby, Sam typed a code into a panel in the wall and watched as purple energy filled a large black door frame. Seconds later, a figure appeared in the occult gateway and rushed into the room.

"Sam! What happened? You never hang up on me! I was so worried! Wh-"

"Tubbo!" Sam calls, causing his friend to stop his fervent interrogation, "Let me show you."

Sam turned to the door behind him and gestured for Tubbo to follow. Even though Sam tried to walk slowly, Tubbo had to almost jog to keep up with the much taller man beside him. He followed Sam through a maze of passages, realizing just how little of the prison he had seen. He was just starting to wonder how much more he hadn't yet seen when Sam stopped in front of a pair of large white doors. He typed a code into a panel on the wall and Tubbo heard the faintest of clicks. Sam pushed the door open and led Tubbo inside.

It was a giant room, but surprisingly not very tall. Most of the rooms the public were able to see had ceilings that were two or three stories above the floor. The low ceiling in this room made it feel smaller, but also safer. This room did not have the same atmosphere as the rest of the prison. It gave you the feeling that everything would be okay.

Tubbo glanced around the room to see one wall covered in drawers and cupboards. Each was labeled with some sort of medical supply, including a plethora of different potions. The other side was a wall of doors. Each one looked heavy enough to keep a nuclear apocalypse from getting into the room they led to.

Tubbo saw one of these doors was open and looked up to ask Sam why when he noticed how confused Sam looked.

"Why..." Sam trailed off.

"I'm assuming that door is not supposed to be open."

Tubbo watched as Sam sprinted to the open door. He watched Sam desperately search the room for something. He watched as Sam came back out of the room, dazed and distressed.

"What's wrong, Sam?" Tubbo questioned gently.

Sam looked down as he replied to his friend, "She's gone."
