"She's late." Steve snarled angrily at me as if it were my fault.

"Yeah...I noticed." I said in a bored tone, though I was secretly panicking.

Battle of the Bands had finally come and Cassie was nowhere in sight. At first, it hadn't been such a big deal. Setting up equipment was something Steve, Adam, and I had been doing by ourselves since WashOut's first show. It wasn't until they called us for mic checks did we find we had a problem.

Cassie had a stronger voice than most. With Steph, mic tuning hadn't really been necessary. Her voice had been nice, but not overly powerful. Cassie's, on the other hand, dominated the room whenever she sang. During the mic check process we had been able to accurately adjust my microphone so it would produce more sound with little input from my own voice, but with Cassie it had been all guess work.

And Steve was not too thrilled to know we were leaving the most crucial gig of our lives up to chance.

Steve suddenly sat up and started pacing. "Goddammit! We're on in ten minutes! Where is she?"

"Where's who?" Adam asked as he walked into the room we had been told to stay in until we were called on to play.

"Cassie. Who else would I mean?" Steve spat at him. Adam jumped in surprise.

"Oh! Yeah, she's with Naomi right now. She sent me a text a little while ago saying she was on her way so she should be here any minute now."

"Who's Naomi?" Steve and I asked at the same time.

"My girlfriend."

Steve and I stared wide-eyed at Adam, paralyzed by shock. After a moment, I turned to look at Steve expecting to receive some answers. Before long he noticed my intense gaze and whipped around to say, "Don't look at me! I have no idea what he's talking about."

I raised an eyebrow at him. "But your Steve and he's Adam. How could you not know?"

Steve shrugged and turned his attention back to Adam.

For a moment, Adam just stood there, watching the two of us as we waited patiently for an explanation. Finally, he said, "Guess I forgot to tell you guys, huh?"

"You think?" I remarked sarcastically. Steve elbowed me in the ribs.

"Ouch! What was that for?" I snapped at Steve who glared up at me.

"Just shut up," he said to me before turning to Adam. "So tell us now. When did you start dating?"

Adam adopted a sheepish expression and fidgeted with his fingers. "Soon after..." He trailed off and his gaze settled on me.

Oh. Now everything made sense. He got together with his girlfriend after I lost mine. Because of that he didn't say anything to us, or more specifically, to me. I couldn't help but frown at the unpleasant memory.

I felt Steve look up at me, making the connection as well, before turning back to Adam. "Okay, then. I guess the details aren't important right now. Why does Naomi have Cassie?"
