"Nora, I need you over here!" A voice called across the ER and Nora turned to see who was trying to get her attention. Spotting the doctor in question, she headed straight over to them.
"Where does it hurt?" She asked the patient writhing in pain on the bed. They were covered in blood and dust, likely from the shopping mall that had been damaged this morning when one of the Saviours had gone head to head with a villain named Megahertz.
Working in the ER, a lot of their patients tended to be innocent bystanders that had just been in the wrong place at the wrong time.
"My leg!" The patient managed to groan, and Nora immediately shifted down the bed.
"It looks like a fracture." Dr Kim explained, "Everything is backed up from the accident and there aren't any Operating Rooms available. Can you just make him comfortable until we can get someone over to administer some IV pain relief?"
Nora nodded, and as the doctor left she turned her attention back to the patient once more. "I'm going to place my hands on your leg and help you with the pain, okay?" She glanced up at the man to make sure he was paying attention and when he nodded, she reached out and gently placed her gloved hands on his leg.
Closing her eyes, Nora pulled on her power until she felt it tingle through her palms.
"Thank you so much." The man sagged against the bed as her pain relieving power kicked in, numbing his entire leg from the knee down.
"We'll need to get you some proper painkillers and into surgery as soon as possible," She explained, "but this should tide you over until then."
From that bed, Nora made her way around the room being called patient after patient to help them. This morning's fight had been one of the worst ones for a while, and there was a constant influx of patients all day.
By the time the ER had been cleared out it was well into the night and Nora was starting to get a headache; a side effect of using her power too much. Everyone got them, and some were more debilitating than others. While it was only a headache at the moment, if she continued to use her power then it would likely progress into a migraine, but that hadn't happened in a long time. Secretly she hoped that the fact that she used her powers on an almost daily basis was raising her stamina.
Rubbing at her temple, she reached for a bottle of water when the curtain she was hiding behind was wrenched back, making her jump and slop some of the water down herself. Cursing, she put the lid back on the bottle and tried to brush the water off but only succeeded in making it look a lot worse.
Letting out an exasperated sigh, she turned to the person who'd interrupted and found them watching her with an amused expression on their face.
"Can I help you, Evans?" She asked her fellow intern. His power was probability based and he was constantly being asked what the odds of a surgery were and whether it was going to be worth it for the patient. It seemed like most of the people in their intake had powers that helped the hospital out in some way, which didn't seem fair to those with other powers who also wanted to become surgeons. Still, Nora supposed that she shouldn't complain about having one of the few, coveted spots.
"Dr Ross was asking for you. There's another patient just come in. He's dressed like a civilian, but the injuries look like they're hero related."
"I'll be right there." Nora nodded. "Which bed?"
"Bed three."
Taking one last look at her wet scrub top and wishing that her power could help her do something about that – a wind or fire power would be handy right about now – Nora pushed the curtain to one side and stepped back out into the Emergency Room.
