Early the next morning, Heidi wakes up to find herself alone in her bed. She figures that her mother got up early to attend to her Queenly duties and wanted to let her sleep longer. Heidi heads downstairs for breakfast and sees that Joseff is already there. At the table, they were served waffles drizzled in chocolate syrup. As Heidi was eating her waffles she asked the maidservant; Gerta, if her and Joseff's parents would be joining them for breakfast. Gerta replied "I'm afraid not your highness. Your mother and father are holding a meeting with the council and later have a meeting with the ambassador from the Netherlands to sign an agreement for a new trade partnership." Heidi holds her head with the palm of her hand and puts her elbow on the table, as she says discouraged and disappointed "Mama and Papa are always busy."
Gerta takes Heidi's empty plate away and says standing next to her "It is their duties as King and Queen your highness, and one day it will be your brother's duty." Gerta walks back to the kitchen behind Joseff. Joseff follows Gerta with his head as she enters the kitchen located behind his seat. Joseff looks back at Heidi and only shakes his head without saying a word. Heidi too remains silent, looks down at the table, and begins to think about her importance in the royal family. She knows she won't succeed the throne because Joseff is destined to become King, and therefore, she will hold no purpose. She is just the spare.
After breakfast, Heidi decides to find what her purpose in the kingdom is and that she could be of some use. She thinks that someone with her 'skills' can surely have a place in the world. By her parent's reaction at last night's dinner, she figures being a soldier is out of the question, so she decides to find something else. Heidi feels that she really should be with her brother studying their daily lessons and listening to their tutor, but Heidi has never cared for her schooling or even cared about it for that matter. She figures it should be Joseff that should get educated since it is he who will be running the kingdom after their parents are no longer around. And besides, she thinks she gets a better education from experiencing the outside world rather than being in a classroom listening to some boring teacher.
As Heidi walks outside to think of a purpose for her when she hears Olaf in the stables reading something out loud. Heidi decides to walk over to the stables and to talk to Olaf and Sven about her problem. As Heidi walks across the courtyard, she thinks to herself out loud "Maybe Olaf can help me." Heidi enters through the door of the stables, she sees Olaf reading a book to Sven as Sven munches on some carrots inside a bucket. "Hey, Olaf!" Heidi startles Olaf as he turns around abruptly and Sven looks up with the bucket stuck on his nose. "Heidi!" Olaf happily skips over to her "Did you come for storytime?" Heidi said while smiling but also troubled at the same time "No Olaf, I wanted to ask you something." "Sure, Heidi." Olaf said happily "What's my destiny?" Heidi asked Olaf, but he stood there and looked at Heidi with confusion. "I mean what's my purpose in life?" Heidi repeated with a different phrase. Olaf, being the over-optimistic snowman, just said the obvious "You're the Princess, of course!"
Heidi looks at Olaf trying to correct her statement "No Olaf, I'm saying like, what will I get to do once Joseff is King? What is there for me to do when I have no responsibilities in the royal court?" Olaf is stumped by her question and answered her honestly, putting his right twig arm on her shoulder "I don't know Heidi. You better ask someone who is far older and wiser than me to answer a question like that." He then turns around and tries to help get the bucket off of Sven's nose. As Heidi turns around, she blows a strand of hair out of her face feeling somewhat foolish for asking a talking snowman. Heidi decides to take Olaf's advice and go find someone who is 'older and wiser.'(according to the talking snowman.)
Heidi walks to the castle gates but the two guards standing at the doors stop her from passing. "I'm just going for a walk." She tells them. The guards then stepped aside and allowed her to pass. Heidi walked through town and saw the busy center plaza. She felt responsible to be a part of its protection, but never getting the chance to do anything. She wanders around the docks aimlessly repeating the thoughts in her head about what she can do for her home or the world in a bigger sense. She then comes to the statue of her grandparents at the end of town. Heidi looks up and stares at the bronze figures of her grandparents when they were children and said "You two might not have known it, but you both made a great impact on this kingdom." she sat down beneath it and sighed with a disappointed tone.
