𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄 𝐖𝐀𝐓𝐂𝐇𝐈𝐍𝐆
𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝐊𝐞𝐳𝐢𝐚𝐡𝐈 𝐖𝐀𝐋𝐊 𝐎𝐍 the familiar sidewalk, looking around at the familiar buildings and houses. It's been five years since I have last been in this city. Moving to an entire different city for college meant leaving a lot behind, including my best friend.
It was hard to leave Saelor behind. He has been my best friend since we both were 5 years old, and we have never left each other's side. As we both became 19, we parted ways. I went for college in a different country, while Saelor stayed and studied in a local college. It was nothing but FaceTime calls at odd times, texts and voicemails for the past years.
But now, after five years I am finally coming back in my hometown and I can meet him.
It's funny how I still remember the local streets even though it's been five years since I even stepped on them. In just a few minutes I find myself standing in front of Saelor's parents' house, knocking the door, where we have decided to meet for the festive season.
The door opens almost immediately and reveals Saelor. He is taller, and he now has finally grown a thin mustache. His hair is longer and darker, but all in all, he still is a young handsome man he was before.
"Sparrow!" He yells at my sight, making me laugh as we do the handshake we created when we were ten, and then proceed on to hugging. "How have you been?"
"I have been pretty good, you?" I ask him, running my hand through my shaggy black hair.
"I have been alright, but now I am doing even better since I just got to see your face in person!" He replies, making me laugh yet again. He slightly moves aside and motions with his hands for me to enter inside. I step inside to notice his parents' house just the same as it was before. One look at the interior reminds me of all the games we used to play which we used to make up within a minute.
We both proceed to sit on the couch in the living room, when his mum comes out of the kitchen.
"Sparrow it's so nice to see you!" She says, as I get up to give her a hug.
"It's so nice to see you too Mrs. Andersons," I reply back.
"You've grown so much," She says, placing a small kiss on my forehead. Saelor's mum has always been like my mum. She used to be our ride for me and Saelor's play dates in the park. "Would you both like something? I made some mango cheesecake," She asks, once I am sitting down on the couch again.
"Oh yes the cheesecake will be completely fine," Saelor replies, and she disappears into the kitchen again.
Saelor and I begin to talk, talking about our experiences at our separate colleges, and how relaxing it is to finally be free from it.
"Oh," I say, suddenly remembering, "how is Isla?" Isla is Saelor's young sister. She was only 14 when I left for college. She used to have a humongous crush on me, but she has always been chill enough to never let it show. It was Saelor who told me this; apparently he once snooped in her diary and read all of this about me.
"She's fine," He says, "beginning to go to the same college as me. I told her you'll be coming today. She's just upstairs, studying." If anything, Isla has been one of the most intelligent people I have known, even though she was just in ninth grade when I left. She was very analytical and practical about ever situation she faced.
I nod, and continue to eat the cheesecake Saelor's mum gave us just two minutes ago. As I continue to eat the cheesecake, I hear footsteps coming down the stairs.
"Mum do we have any sandwiches left?" I hear a familiar female voice, except it's now not that high pitched as it used to be.
Isla.
"Yeah we do, you can have some," I hear Mrs. Andersons reply.
"Isla, Sparrow's here! You should meet him," Saelor calls out. Isla comes out from the kitchen, and walks up to us. I get up from the couch to greet her.
Oh Isla.
She has grown beautifully. Her eyes are a drowning ocean blue, with light brown hair, and perfectly arched eyebrows with lips just the right tint of red.
Isla, oh Isla.
When did you suddenly become the girl of my dreams?
"H-hey Is-Isla," I find myself stuttering over my words. I have never done that before in front of her.
She giggles softly. "Hey Sparrow," She says, her voice even more confident than before. "How was college?"
"It was fun," I say, "how is your college going on?"
"Really well, we have exams pretty soon so I have been studying for those,"
"Oh, good luck Isla,"
"Thank you." She smiles at me and leaves the living room, leaving me and Saelor alone.
"So," I say with a pause, "she's grown."
Saelor laughs, as he plops on the couch. "Yeah she has. She is going to become one successful woman in her life. And I cannot wait to see where she goes next."
Oh Isla.
I never expected to find myself falling for you.
But I guess some things just turn out to be different than what we assume.
