" Holy shit! " I exclaimed, and the eyes zoomed towards us from the blackness. A humongous, green reptilian body came out of the opening and circled the hall as if wrapping itself around us. It was so long that it took seven full circles of the hall to finally settle like a vicious beast before us. We all held hands, our hearts were reaching our mouths.
No chance to run away, we had come straight to our doom.
The serpent rose its neck in the air and stared down at us. The skin beneath its head was scaly white, and a long red tongue came out of his mouth that startled us all.For quite a while, the snake kept staring at us from his enormous sockets. It was more dangerous than any Burnthound or Titan out there. The mouth of the serpent opened slightly and, a loud hissing sound filled my eardrums.
" Why are you here? " A strong feminine voice reached us as if it was an old lady who had been drinking all her life.
We didn't speak, rather looked around to see who had spoken.
" Answer me! " Angrier this time.
The serpent had its mouth open. Nichole reached my ear and whispered.
" It's the snail. It's talking," he pushed me forward.
" We - uh - we - " I stammered, trying to make eye contact with it, " we were going to the other side of the cave. "
" Nobody " it hissed, " nobody has been here for a long time. What brought you in here? "
The snake circled around us slowly, eyeing us all.
We looked down, trying to avoid eye contact as if it'll burn us if we looked straight into its sockets.
" I smell fear, oh yes, that's definitely fear " it hissed again, and my heart started to hammer. " You seem to be outcasts like you're on a run from someone, " it stretched the S in every word he spoke.
" We were just going to the other end of the cave. " I said, trying to sound as calm as possible.
" Why did you choose the abandoned path? " The female voice of the serpent grew quieter, as it took the eighth round in the hall, coming even more close to us.
" Have you been sent here by the Burnthounds? "
" No. " I replied.
" Nothing happens here without their will or permission," It rose before all of us again, " I sense you're lying. "
" No. We're not lying. We were running away from the Burnthounds. They didn't send us here. "
" Running away, are we? " The snake's mouth stretched as if grinning at our foolishness, " and where will you go? "
" Please let us go, " Yormen uttered, with a sense of fear in his voice.
" Do you know, " the serpent spoke, " why the Burnthounds never try to come into the cave? "
" We - uh - " I couldn't speak.
" Because they can't break the rocks around the cave? " asked Brandon, looking down.
" No, "
" They don't have the balls to come in here, " Nichole whispered to himself.
The snake's eyeballs focused on us, " I belonged to the Titans, and the Burnthounds captured me in here," It raised its head in the air, looking at the dome-shaped ceiling," We had a tough battle, and I ate hundreds of Burnthounds in here. "
" You-you're saying that the Titans attacked this place? " I asked.
" Yes, " It replied, stretching the last of the word.
" Did they not win? "
" Why the hell do you need to hear that story? " Nichole whispered in my ear.
" The Gods interrupted, " It looked down at us with bulging eyes, " we could've won easily, yes, but the Gods forced the Titans to make peace. " The serpent shook his head and we backed off a bit, " I could never go back to my world because the Burnthounds lied! They said I was killed here in the dungeons. THEY LIED! " It shrieked. The noise filled the entire dome and bounced back from the walls. We put our hands on our ears against the deafening sound.
" So you've been here since then? All alone? " I asked after the echoes were gone, feeling his pain of abandonment.
" I want to crush the Burnthounds! I want to taste their blood again. I want them to suffer. " It said angrily, nostrils stretching.
None of us said anything. The snake stared at us like we were the ones who trapped it in here.
" You cannot escape the Afterlife, " it hissed, " you are but mere spirits. You cannot do nothing. "
" Well, " I took the insult on my ego again, " we're already halfway through, and we would've gotten to the door of the Afterlife if you hadn't stopped us."
The serpent shook his head again.
" You won't be able to escape. "
" The Titans have almost started an attack against the Burnthounds. " Stank said, who had been quiet all this time.
" What did you say? " It stretched the last words.
" Lord Mesihall and the council of Titans are fighting the Burnthounds. We seeked the opportunity and decided to escape, " said Brandon. The snake breathed heavily, sending warm air all around.
" Is it true that the Titans have returned to this cursed land? "
" Yes, " I said.
" If what you speak is true, then I have something that could help you. " It said in a lighter voice, " go from the path behind you, and you shall find a chamber filled with weapons of the mighty Titans. "
We turned our necks, a dark dome-shaped entrance stood several hundred yards away, beyond the curls of the serpent's body.
" You must tell the Titans, that I am stuck in here. You are my only hope for freedom. " It's long tongue flipped before his mouth. The serpent turned its head and slithered towards a dome behind him. Its head entered the dome and the body followed at a blazing speed. The eight curls unfolded themselves and the tail went swirling in the end.I gulped and sighed, touching my knees with both hands.
" Big snail, huh? " Nichole said, loud enough for us all to hear. We all laughed and shook off the terror that had filled us a few minutes ago.
" Let's get going, " said Brandon, and we jogged towards the dome behind us to retrieve the weapons of the Titans.
