Chapter 2
Despite her uncle being stern and sure about her attending high school, for the very first time today, Charlotte could not help but turn her alarm off and act as though today was going to be a normal day. She wrapped her thick mulberry purple blanket over her body, shielding her from the cold air she was trying to avoid. Her tired body relaxed underneath the warmth her blanket and body heat provided her, hoping, and praying that Stefan would see her asleep and leave her be. However, this was not the case.
Her heart sunk into her chest the moment she heard the light taps against her oak door, and she wished that she could sink further into the soft mattress she laid upon. She shoved her face further into her pillow and pulled her warm blanket up to her chin, preparing to relax her eyes and act as though she remained in a deep sleep – one that Stefan would not want to disturb. Light poured into her room as the door squeaked open, and the sounds of his heavy footsteps echoed in her ears the closer they got to her. His earthy smell, with a hint of some sort of jasmine scent, filled her nostrils as she tried to ignore her anxious thoughts and force even breathing.
A sigh escaped his lips, probably disappointed and not falling for his niece's attempt at acting before the sound of his footsteps began to move past her bed. She knew what was coming, and she was hoping he would not do it. Perhaps he was just admiring her curtains, maybe he liked black curtains. However, much to his dismay, he was not admiring the floral-patterned jet-black curtains, and in fact, his hands had wrapped around the edges of the curtains. He cleared his throat, as if to be a warning sign for what was about to come before he ripped open the curtains and allowed the bright morning sun to shine through her windows and in her tired eyes.
Really, she should have been grateful that she was yet to activate her vampire side – or, if that was even supposed to happen as a girl who was only half of. The sun would have burned her the moment Stefan opened those curtains; but they did not, and the sun was yet to have any effect on her. She did not need the lapis lazuli stone to protect her like Stefan and Damon did, though she did occasionally need sunscreen when in the summer. Her pale skin did not cope well with the warmth of the sun. But the sun still caused for pain and frustration whenever it managed to get itself in her eyes, especially in the morning.
"Char, get up." Stefan taunted her teasingly as she squeezed her eyes shut, a quiet groan escaping her lips as she clung to the blanket. "You're going to school, end of discussion."
"You mean... you're not even going to give me a chance to argue against it?" Charlotte whined as Stefan's hands wrapped around the end of the blanket, gently tugging on it despite the grip she had on it.
"Nope," Stefan said with a breathy chuckle as he ripped the blanket off her body, forcing her into the cold air despite her warm pajamas. "I want you to have a normal life. This is the first step in getting one."
An annoyed groan escaped her lips as she grumpily threw her legs over the edge of her bed, keeping a frustrated stare toward her uncle as she did so. He flashed one last smile, a small attempt at what he thought would cheer her up, before he left the room to allow her to get herself dressed. Grumpily, she ripped open the drawer of her old wooden dresser and grabbed the first shirt she saw; a grey shirt. She of course regretted the decision once she had realized that she had already begun to sweat from the nerves, though the young girl was too tired to find something else that was clean. So, she paired her soon to be sweat-stained grey shirt with a pair of blue mom jeans, and a checkered jacket. Her mustard yellow vans did not really complete the look, and in fact made it look worse, but she was too tired to care.
She stared at herself blankly through the mirror that was hung just above her dresser and tried to force a smile to break away from the angry demeanor she had been giving off. Charlotte was not the most social person on the planet, which was bound to happen after being raised by an introvert like Stefan Salvatore as well as the constant moving around, btu she figured she needed to make some sort of effort today. The people in Mystic Falls were supposed to be nice, not that Charlotte had ever met anyone new aside from Elena, and Stefan would scold her if he found out that she had been walking through the halls with an angry frown upon her face.
