Everything is quiet as Abigail stares into the murky depths of the well. She comes here often because the peacefulness always seems to calm her when she needs to get away from the crowded orphanage. Abigail gazes at her own reflection that peers up at her. She sighs and her fingertips brush the cool water, causing a tiny wake of ripples. She whispers something but only the water can hear her.
She leaves the well, the hem of her long skirt barely avoiding the soft grass beneath her bare feet. Abigail walks slowly back to the orphanage just around the corner.
The building is a big grey slab of concrete with hairline cracks running across it. The tangled ivy climbed up the walls, covering many windows, already boarded up. Evergreen Orphanage was not a very inviting place.
The door opens. Abigail steps inside. The orphanage is wide awake with chaos and noisy children.
"That's my bread roll! I saw it first!"
"No, I got to it first and I have it now, there's nothing you can do about it!"
Quarrels broke out over dinner time, there was scarcely enough food given to growing children, full of energy. Abigail sat down at a table, alone. She subconsciously picked at her bread, not touching bowl of steaming hot soup either. She had a lot on her mind at the minute.
A rather tall girl was walking towards her, swishing her hips in an unnatural fashion. She sat down at the end of the bench and slid up it to sit right beside Abigail.
"Hey there." she said.
A mumbled response came from Abigail.
The girl had short blonde hair and a smirk on her face that everyone knows means that she's up to something.
"I don't recall seeing you this afternoon, where have you been?" she said in a fake sweet tone.
"Don't want to tell me?"
This girl was one of Abigail's problems. No one should have to deal with annoying people like her. She just provokes people into doing things they shouldn't.
" Give it a rest Eva."
Abigail picked up her soup spoon and raised it to her lips but a hand smacked it out of the way and sent it tumbling to the ground, landing with a metallic clang.
" Oops! I'm sooooo sorry, how terribly clumsy of me!"
Eva wasn't a good actress, she could barely keep the grin off her face. Abigail slowly bent down to pick up the spoon. By the time she had sat up again, Eva was gone.
Abigail finally finished eating her dinner in peace. She stood up and put her plate to side, glancing around her quickly, to make sure that no one was following. She thought that it was going to be a lot harder to get outside un-noticed but so far it was just too easy. Everything was perfect except for one tiny little problem. Abigail stealthily sneaked out the open door - before bumping into the towering figure of Mr Sanders.
