chapter 1
~~
I slammed my locker shut for the last time today.'Maybe the weekend will bring a few drops of happiness to last until monday' I thought to myself as I continued to walk through the usual sea of fellow students.
I claimed the last seat of the bus, just like I do everyday. One kid called me greedy for always 'stealing' it, but he doesn't get that I just don't want anyone else to sit with me. I plugged my headphones into my ears and ignored the bus full of obnoxious teens. The Friday rides always seem the longest. Anticipation, I guess.

"Shit!" I forgot my key upstairs this morning. Again. Usually, I wait outside until my mother gets home, but ever since she's taken up a second job, I hardly see her anymore. I guess I could try calling Tara. You have reached the automated voice mailbox of-

No, thanks. Now what the hell do I do?
Walk to the park, clear your mind, Ashlyn.
Those fucking voices. Well, why not the park? I always obey the voice, anyway.
As my boots hit the gravel, I turned the corner and my safe haven came to view. The park was my safe haven, honestly. Not only did it allow me to think about things during my walk there, but I had found a 'secret' patch of rocks over the stream, and I liked to sit on them and see how many pebbles I could skip. It also got me away from my drunk and angry step dad on the weekends.
Except, there was already somebody in my spot today. It was a boy; he looked... upset. My anxiety screamed at me to turn around and run home.
'People!' It yelled.
I inched a step closer, trying to make out the body on my rocks. The boy looked around my age, 17. He had dark brown hair that was slightly spiked up at his forehead. From here, his eyes also looked brown, but I couldn't quite tell. He was well built, that I could definitely see. What is he doing he-
Snap!
'Shit.You fucked up again, Ashlynn'
I shushed the voice. The boy swung his head in my direction.
"Hi." I blurted out.
"Uh, hey." He said hesitantly, and I could tell he wanted some sort if explanation.
"Sorry, uhm, this is kind of, just, uh, well-""Your spot too?" He chuckled a little.
"Yeah. Why'd you laugh?" Did I actually just ask him that?
"I don't know, that was cute."
Cute? But I stuttered.
"Oh." Was all I said. The boy patted the rock beside him, motioning for me to sit. "You don't mind if I join you?"
"Not at all, now that I know you're not some guy with a chainsaw."
"Okay." I laughed a little, and scooted on top of the large rock.
"Soo..what brings you here?"
God, I sound like an idiot.
"Oh, I come here a lot.I never really do anything, I just like to think. I'm guessing you do the same?""Actually," I turned towards him a bit. "Sometimes, I like to see how many rocks I can skip on the water. It sounds stupid, but it helps clear my thoughts."
"Its not stupid," Here's that angelic laugh, again; revealing his single dimple. "I never learned how to skip rocks growing up they always just fell in the water."
"Oh. My dad taught me when I was little, its not that hard."
"I mean, Jason." I corrected myself out loud, immediately regretting it.
"Who's Jason?" He asked."Nobody." I looked down.
"Oh."
Silence fell, but it wasn't necessarily awkward.
"Well, maybe you can teach me." I looked back up.
"How to skip pebbles?"
"Yeah." He smiled at me.
"Oh, okay, yeah, sure." I let out a little laugh.
"I like your laugh, pebble girl."
And there I sat all afternoon; skipping rocks with pebble boy.
