a few days later

   Biana Vacker doesn't cry.

   It was the one unspoken rule that kept me going. Like tallying the days as a prisoner, I tallied the days I had gone without crying until the wood on my bed frame became so scratched up that Stina threatened to report me for keeping a cat without permission.

   It had been 1307 days without crying, and I had broken it with a single tear.

   For a dude with no manners.

   Okay, so Tam wasn't some emo dude. Okay, so he was the reason Marella was comforting me. Something was wrong with my best friend anyway. She was too...happy. She didn't laugh at my tears, she wiped them away.

   "Who are you, and what have you done with Marella," I sobbed into her coat. She not-so-subtly scooted away from me.

   "Don't worry about me. Anyway, I know what will cheer you up."

   "What?" I peered at her through glassy eyes that made the world go fuzzy.

   "Honeydukes. We can go candy shopping." Marella grinned.

   "Chocolate?" My voice cracked at the end.

   "Chocolate."

  "Sorry, I had to deal with some jerk in the common room." Marella said as she swung on her coat.

  "What happened?" I bit back a smirk.

  "Well, first," Marella held up one finger, "he insulted me. Then, he was trying to flirt with me or something? I have no damn idea what he was doing but it was stupid."

  I froze. That technique sounded familiar. "What did you say?"

  "I told him that his bangs looked weird and that he was a moron. And then I told him I was lesbian." Marella smiled smugly.

  "Tam." I said under my breath.

  Marella glanced at me. "Sorry, I didn't hear you."

  I forced a smile. "Nothing. I'm just glad you put him in his place."

  "Yeah," Marella smiled back. "Anyways, I'm not sure if he'd be trying to flirt with me if he knew I liked his sister, not him."

  "Still stuck on her? I'd thought you would have moved on by now." I said as we trudged with a few pairs of Hogwarts students down to Honeydukes.

  Marella shrugged. "I had a few classes with her today. I think I'll buy her chocolate."

  I grinned. "Ooooh..." I said like a first former when a kid got sent to the headmaster's office.

  "Shut up," Marella said, right as we reached Honeydukes. The door jingled as we entered the shop. "Try not to gorge yourself on too many chocolates." She winked and wandered down a busy aisle full of them.

  I ran my finger down rows of Chocolate Frogs, Exploding bonbons, Pumpkin Pasties, and Licorice Wands. I felt a tingling in my mouth and reached out for–

  "Try not to drool, will you Vacker?" I jumped at the sharp voice behind me.

  "Song. How terribly unpleasant to see you."

  "I could say the same to you." Tam ran his hand through those silvery bangs.

  "I see you've nursed your ego after my friend turned you down." I mused, grabbing some toffees and shoving them into my pocket.

  "And I see that your parents still don't give you pocket money." Tam smirked, studying his nails. "You've betrayed the family, Bia." He mocked.

  "Shut up." I growled. 

  "I don't think I will, Vacker. Or wait, you aren't a Vacker anymore, are you? After, you know–"

  "You have nothing to do with me or my past." But already I could remember it. Tam eyes meeting mine across the table as the Howler screamed into my ear.

  You've betrayed the family, Bia. You are not a Vacker, and you are not my daughter. What have you done?

  I leaned against one of the rows of candy, and heard chocolate toppling over as I gripped the cardboard boxes behind me, my head spinning with the memory.

  I don't remember the rest. Just a clear, sweet voice somewhere in front of me.

  "Tam Song, what have you done?"
