y/n clicked the car door shut behind her, a cool metallic thud fading into the morning air. a leash, bright red against maru's tan coat, dangled loosely from her fingers as the pup happily sniffed around, oblivious to the storm that brewed in his owner's chest. y/n's father stood waiting beside her, one hand stuffed his bagel into his jacket pockets and the other holding his hot beverage, motioned more towards the center of town, and they walked in silence, their feet crunching over the gravel-strewn sidewalk.
y/n squinted into the late morning sunshine, adjusting her own grip on her things—food, drink, polaroid, purse, leash, phone—more out of habit than necessity. maru trotted beside her, tongue lolling as they reached a basketball court tucked between a y-intersection and another row of old storefronts. the smell of coffee still clung to her senses as she suddenly found herself picturing the barista boy's face; blushing, fumbling as he handed over the small dessert like it was the grandest gesture.
'it had been kind. too kind.' her thoughts became cloudy when she replayed the scene in her head, as both her and her father crossed the street and stopped at a weathered bench conveniently along the outskirts of the court. y/n tied maru's leash loosely around the armrest, sitting down with a sigh. her father followed suit, unfolding the crinkled paper bag with his breakfast inside.
y/n sat stiffly, eating her cheese danish, dipping it into her berry parfait with one hand, and her phone gripped in her other as if to shield her from the weight of the atmosphere. she pretended to scroll, to text someone—anyone, since she had already messaged everyone that she felt she needed to, using it earlier as an excuse as if the gesture alone would put up a much-needed wall between them.
the silence felt thick, heavy, yet she couldn't bring herself to shatter it.
her father stroked maru's fur while he ate; his gaze far off, as if the passing cars held more weight than the unspoken tension between them.
after a while, he glanced over at her. "...what are you doing on your phone?" he asked plainly, breaking the silence with a tone too casual for y/n's current mood.
"texting." her voice was somewhat flat, but her thumbs were unmoving though she hadn't even typed a word. she was currently on her home screen, mindlessly opening and exiting from her many apps.
