**No one pov

Everything was dark. Explosions lit the smoky depths of the cities bridge. Y/n ran, her little legs barely capable to keep her upwards. Tears ran down her face, creating paths where smoke and blackness were. She stumbled and fell, cutting her head on the sharp brick. She held her face as she got up, looking for a way out of this war-ridden place.

The enforcers had already killed hundreds. Y/n's mother was one of them and she had been running since, scared to be caught. Scared to be killed. Loud sounds echoed around her, guns firing, bombs launching. Bits of rock landed near her, causing her to fall over in fear of being hit.  She clambered to her feet, her head pounding. Then she saw them coming. An enforcer was coming in her direction, a mask on his/her face. She stood paralyzed as something was lifted towards her head. She knew this was it. She cowered waiting for it. A shot rang out. Y/n opened her eyes to find the enforcer dead on the floor. She stared in shock and didn't notice someone coming towards her. She was grabbed by someone and hoisted onto their shoulders. Then they were both moving quick, shadows racing past. Y/n remembered seeing 2 older girls. One with blue hair and one with pink. Soon after she passed out.

**a few hours later

Y/n woke with a bad head. She looked around and found herself in a small but clean room with a few candles lighting the small space.  She then saw a figure crouched in the corner of the room fiddling with something. She edged away from the person who then turned to look at Y/n. The figure walked over to y/n. They had a hood over their face and wore a big cloak.

"Are you alright kid?" they asked. Their voice was slightly rough but was feminine. Y/n said nothing but stared at them with wide eyes. The figure scoffed and pulled down their hood. "Is this better?"

The woman was around 40 and had short black hair. Her face had a few scars on it. She was muscly and quite scary looking. Y/n nodded, unsure of what to say. The women went to a nearby table and picked up a bowl of liquid. She put it in front of y/n and backed off.

"Drink. It'll help with your injuries. You inhaled a lot of smoke and toxins that night." Y/n looked into the lady's eyes. They were soft and brown. Kind eyes. Y/n decided she trusted her.  Y/n grabbed the bowl and gulped the drink hungrily. It was very sweet.

"Alright, steady on kiddo," chuckled the lady. Y/n looked up and held out her bowl.

"Can I have some more please?" The lady stared at y/n and laughed.

"Maybe later kid. Anyway, what's your name?"

"y/n."

"That's a nice name y/n. Mines Eva. It's a pleasure to meet you. I don't suppose you have any belongings with you or..." Y/n shook her head, looking up at the tall woman.

"Well, that's fine. Do you want me to take you to your parents or a guardian?" Y/n looked down as tears fell from her face. The thought of her mother made her feel so miserable. Eva went on her knees to comfort the girl.

"It's alright kiddo. We all lose people. Its life in the undercity. A price of war. You can stay with me. I'll look after you." Eva hugged y/n who held onto the woman. Her smell was comforting. Like she was in the woods or in the grass. The 2 stayed like that for a few minutes until Eva let go.

"Hey, how old are you anyway?" Y/n held up her fingers. "4. That's pretty young."

"I turned 4 last week," y/n murmured.

"Wow. Very young. Eh. It doesn't matter. It just shows how brave you are to be surviving during something like this at such a young age. Let's go and get some clean clothes for you. I've bandaged up your head. It looks like a little battle scar." Y/n smiled happily as she jumped off the bed. Eva ruffled her hair and they both walked out, hand in hand.
