Chapter One: A shocking discovery

It was December 19th. A cool winter's morning, fresh snow falling on the ground. The air was cold and frigid, harsh like a whirlwind of emotions.

The time was 8:30 in the morning. While many people were out, buying last-minute Christmas gifts for loved ones and spending time with their families, a boy slept.

A very emo, depressed, annoyed boy.

And why was he sleeping?

Well, today was special. It was his 18th birthday. An adult, finally! He could move out of his house...

Oh, wait he had already done that.

After the mental abuse from his father had gotten out of hand, he had moved out and into a house with his "friends." Really, they were just people that he had known forever.

The oldest, a 30-year-old named Buzz was a lifeguard at the local pool. He had bought this house with his girlfriend Lola before realizing she was more in love with herself than him.

The other people that lived there were Stu (a stuntman,) Max (a runner), and Colette (a Spike fangirl.)

He avoided them.

Usually.

Today was different, because of the fact it was his birthday he was awoken by Colette ramming into the door.

"EDGAR! WAKE UP! I HAVE A WHOLE DAY OF FUN PLANNED FOR US!" She yelled, running over to his bed and then jumping on it.

When he didn't move, she jumped down and crawled under the covers.

And because Colette was weird (that was one thing Edgar had noticed) she decided to start tickling him.

That woke him up.

"Ah! Who are you?" He yelled.

"Who am I? WHAT ARE YOU EVEN SAYING, I'M THE LOSER OF THE GAME YOU DIDN'T KNOW YOU WERE PLAYING. LET'S PLAY AN-"

Edgar cut her off mid-song.

"Look, why are you in bed with me?" He asked.

"Because... it's your birthday! Also, you are so VERY SOFT AND WARM!"

She wrapped her arms around him.

"Get off me." He said blushing.

From the embarrassment of course.

"Okayyyy..." she sadly said.

Edgar watched her slowly get out of bed. That was when he moved.

And then, like a cat...

She pounced on him.

She tackled him to the ground.

"YOU CAN'T GET AWAY THAT EASILY YOU LITTLE EMO! TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY AND I HAVE A FULL DAY OF FUN PLANNED FOR YOU AND ME! FIRST, WE WILL GO ICE SKATING. THEN TO THE DINER. AFTER WE WILL GO TO THAT LITTLE CRYSTAL SHOP I LOVE! THEN TO HOT TOPIC! OUT TO LUNCH AND THEN TO THE CAKERY WHERE WE WILL PICK UP A CAKE! BY THEN WE WILL HEAD HOME AND WATCH MOVIES!"

She was smiling the entire time.

"I think I'm just going to skip this birthday," Edgar admitted.

"But why?" She asked innocently.

"I just hate this time of year, especially today."

"Why?"

"Because... it's not your business. Just, leave me alone." He calmly asked.

"But... I found the perfect cake for you and me-"

He cut her off.

"Look, I don't know what you are trying to do but I'm not having it. Just GO!"

The girl scampered off after his sudden outburst.

He sat back down, not bothering to close the door.

In all honesty, he DID want to spend the day with her, but for different reasons.

He liked her.

And by that, he meant he had a crush on her. While it might not seem like that, he experienced very low levels of attraction.

So it wasn't a huge crush, but it was big enough that her sleeping in the same bed as him would get him a little flustered.

Whatever, no time for that. Feelings were weird and hard to deal with. The emo just wanted to go back to bed.

And so he did.

He was just drifting off when he saw the letter in his bed.

"What on Earth..." he questioned.

It was addressed to Edgar from...

Santa?

Okay, this had to be a joke. Santa wasn't real. It was a prank, obviously left by Colette.

Edgar sighed and ripped open the letter.

Stupid candy canes surrounded the thing.

Ugh. And it smelled like gingerbread.

This was awful.

He sighed again and he started reading the card.

Dear Edgar. I know that this time of year is always hard for you, but this year will be different. Trust me, good things will come your way. You are a special boy who deserves happiness.

Signed,

Santa Mike

Edgar stared at the card in wonder. There was no way this was real.

It had to have been a prank.

It wasn't until he saw the little note at the bottom that he realized this might not be a prank.

Oh, and also? Apologize to Colette. She doesn't deserve you being rude when she is just trying to be nice.

12/13/21

Edgar stared at the letter in wonder.

For the first time in forever, he felt a bit of childhood innocence coming back.

And with innocence, comes the magic that is Christmas.
