Your surprised gaze landed on Hanji, meeting their deep brown eyes. A smile arose on their face, seemingly brightening the room.
Your grip on the pair of books in your hands tightened, corners of your mouth itching upwards. "Hanji! Great to see you again, now that I know your name."
Hanji laughed at your comment, pulling the strap of their bag furter onto their shoulder. "And I still don't know yours yet." They commented.
"Well, that's for me to know," You indicated towards yourself, "and you to find out."
You smiled, looking up at Hanji as they rolled their eyes playfully. "Alright, if you want to be like that. Just make sure you tell me before our wedding."
You knew Hanji was joking but something about that statement made you feel giddy. "Getting a little cocky aren't we? You'll have to ask me out on a date first."
Hanji breathed in, smile enlarging. "Alright, are you free now?"
You searched your brain for anything you needed to specifically do but nothing came to mind. You were only going to spend the day reading and working on your assignment. "Yeah, sure, why not."
You smiled at Hanji once again, turning towards the direction of the stair case leading to the ground floor, Hanji following.
After checking out your books, Hanji led you to a medieval cafe in a large park. Large bushes of wisteria grew up the white wattle and daub walls. There was a garden with beautiful flowers surrounding the whole cafe, vines engulfing the building. Tables were placed around the garden, almost hidden from the world.
The pair of you were seated and served, left to the company of each other. You breathed in the aroma of flowers around you, the roses beside your table a deep red in colour.
There was a lake not far from your table, close enough for you to see the ducklings swimming around atop the surface of the water. "Look, Hanji!" You notified, "Ducklings!"
Hanji laughed at your infatuation with the ducklings, taking a sip from their coffee.
Once the two of you had finished eating and such you continued maundering through the park.
It felt like you two had been talking for hours and hours, and maybe you had been. Conversation seemed to come easily for the two of you and time passed quickly. The more you talked the more it felt like you'd know Hanji your whole life.
"How have your classes been? I hope you weren't too late when I ran into you," they joked.
At first you laugh lightheartedly and shook your head, but the more you thought about it the more conflicted you felt.
"Can I be honest?" You asked, shakily drawing a breath.
Hanji placed a steady hand on your shoulder, slowing their pace. Turning towards you, they smiled reassuringly. "Of course, tell me what's on your mind."
You turned to face them, looking into their eyes before looking away and continuing your walking. "I'm not sure if this whole university thing is for me," you paused, "don't get me wrong, I love the environment and I love being creative and learning, but I feel like i'm falling behind with studying and everything else. I never get time to myself these days, and I feel like i'm getting nowhere,"
Hanji listened as you spoke, nodding their head slowly, hair bobbing in their ponytail. "You sound very stressed, and that's okay, but remember to look after yourself too. In regards to the workload, while I may not be a history or english major, but I do understand time management and studying and i'd always be happy to help with that if you need," they smiled reassuringly, catching your eye.
You smiled back up at them, you eyes lighting up and your heart warming. "that would be really great, thank you,"
"No problem. It's a date,"
You continued walking and talking and as the day got later they offered to walk you back to your apartment as-well.
Reaching your building entrance, Hanji paused and turned to face you. "Today was fun,"
You smiled, "yeah, thank you for everything, it was really nice,"
"Don't worry about it," they said, "here, give me your phone, i'll put in mine number and you can call me when you want help studying,"
Lightly laughing you pulled out your phone, handing it to them. As they typed away you picked at your thumb and bit your lip, anxious about your future but content with the day.
When they were done, Hanji handed your phone back to you, the contact name 'That super hot and kind brunette study buddy'.
Laughing slightly at the name you looked up to meet Hanji's gaze. They looked down at you intently and smiled when you shy'd slightly. "Well, bye stranger," they said in a low tone.
"Y/n," you simply said. They look puzzled, eyebrow creasing.
"Y/n," They repeated, smiling as they said it. The brunette chuckled to themselves, "Bye... Y/n"
You watched as Hanji turned and walked away, butterflies flittering around in the pit of your stomach. With an uncontrollable smile on your face, you rushed inside and up the stairs, into your apartment, where you immediately collapsed onto your bed and stuffed your face into your pillow, kicking your legs like a love-sick schoolgirl.

EDITED AUTHORS NOTE:
Well hi! I'm back... three years later.
This was mostly already written from years ago but I finished up the chapter.
I don't actually watch anime anymore and i'm not as into Hanji (why not? idk! 😭) but I found this old book and I... kind of love it. I didn't realise how short the chapters were but i remember it being such a hassle for me to get them out so dont have super high expectations lol!Anyway, bye!
