second year of the chocolate frog saga!
- - -

On Christmas morning, Hermione woke (Y/N) at a reasonable hour for the very first time. They went down to the common room where they met with Harry and Ron, who already wore their sweaters from Mrs. Weasley and snacked on some sweets.

"About time you two wake up," said Ron, passing each of the girls a gift first thing. "Happy Christmas!"

(Y/N) was still half asleep when she sat on the couch next to Harry. "Happy Christmas," she yawned.

"Well, go on, open them!" said Ron, waving them along.

"Let us give out ours first!" Hermione said, smiling.

She distributed her gifts, one to each of them, and (Y/N) gave out hers. Once everyone had a gift in their hands, they tore open the wrapping paper to see what they'd gotten.

From Ron, (Y/N) received a poster of the Holyhead Harpies quidditch team (a massive surprise considering she only mentioned she liked them once in passing) and a pack of Every Flavor Beans. Hermione got her a copy of Have Yourself a Fiesta in a Bottle! written and signed by Libatious Borage, the world's most famous potioneer – (Y/N) nearly screamed when she opened it.

They seemed to like their gifts from her, too. She remembered Hermione mentioning that she couldn't fit all her books to bring to school that year, so she'd asked her godmother to enchant a small beaded bag with the featherlight charm, as well as an extension charm. Hermione looked delighted.

Ron had been easy that year, too, for his Wizard's Chess set they played with had started to slow down. She got him a new one, as well as a few Honeydukes sweets. He started to set up for a new game while he munched on a cauldron cake.

Harry had gotten quite the range of gifts as well. Ron had gotten him a copy of Flying with the Cannons and from Hermione, a luxury eagle-feather quill. His aunt and uncle had been kind enough to send him a single toothpick.

When (Y/N) glanced over at him, he wasn't flipping through the book and looking at pictures of the Chudley Cannons nor was he testing out the feel of his new quill. He was holding what (Y/N) had gotten him, still wrapped.

She beamed, reaching for his gift to her. When they were both ready, they started to unwrap.

When Harry asked (Y/N) for ideas for Christmas gifts, she'd done the same thing he did to her a year prior – "Oh, just a chocolate wand would be fine," – just so he could feel how frustrating it was.

It backfired, of course, because then Harry said all he wanted was another lone chocolate frog. And of course, (Y/N) had to get it for him.

Sure enough, when she unwrapped her gift, there sat a single chocolate wand still in its packaging. Harry laughed brightly when he finished opening his gift.

"Just what I wanted," he said.

She smiled, feeling her cheeks get warm.

"That's all you got each other?" Ron asked incredulously. "A chocolate wand and a chocolate frog?"

"It's all we asked for," said (Y/N).

"I like it," said Harry absentmindedly as he pulled out the card. "Oh, I got Falco Aesalon!"

"What'd he do?" (Y/N) leaned over to see.

"He was the first recorded Animagus! A falcon," his eyes were bright with excitement as he looked at her again. "I hadn't gotten one of him yet!"

Ron still looked quite dazed as he leaned to whisper to Hermione, "Unbelievable. They're unbelievable,"

"Oh, hush, Ron, they're happy with it,"

"Yeah, but, of all the things..." he turned back to his chess board. "They're best friends, you would think... ah, whatever,"
