third year!
includes painfully obvious attraction as 13 year olds try to pretend it isn't there.
- - -"Okay, here,"
(Y/N) shuffled Harry in front of her into the scarcely populated alley in Hogsmeade village. She peered around the corner, keeping a sharp eye out for any wandering professors or Percy Weasley, who would be sure to report any suspicious behavior straightaway.
"Did we make it?"
She searched a few seconds more just to be sure. "Looks like it,"
She heard the rustling of the invisibility cloak as Harry removed it from his shoulders.
It was only their third trip to Hogsmeade, but (Y/N) and Harry had sneaking in and out of Hogwarts down to a science. They couldn't have done it without the help of the Marauder's Map revealing all the secret passageways and lurking authorities.
"So," said Harry. She could hear his smile. "Where now?"
(Y/N) moved past him. "This way,"
She was lucky enough to know Hogsmeade well, and as such, knew all of the secret places people rarely visited – perfect for Harry who was still meant to be at the castle. Just behind one of the shops was a tiny little pavilion used for outdoor seating during the warmer months. When it was cold, however, it was nearly forgotten. It was there they planned to meet up with Hermione and Ron before they'd head to Zonkos. (Y/N) was pleased to find it empty when they arrived.
She brushed the snow off of a little stone bench and sat, shoving her hands deep into her coat pockets. Harry regarded her as he approached. "Are you cold?" He'd already begun unwinding his scarf before she answered.
"Sweltering, actually,"
He passed it off to her and (Y/N) accepted it gratefully, wrapping it snugly around her neck and hiding her nose in it. "Thanks," she said. It smelled sweet like he did.
"You wear that scarf more than I do," he said. "Maybe I should just give it to you for Christmas."
"What, so I can forget it in my dormitory with my other scarf?"
He laughed. "Fair point,"
(Y/N) tried very hard not to think about how his laughter made her feel warm. They sat in silence for a brief moment. She hurried to fill it.
"Where are Ron and Hermione?"
"They said something about visiting the shrieking shack," Harry sounded relieved to have something to talk about. "Maybe they're still there?"
Part of (Y/N) hoped he was right – that their friends had lost track of time and forgotten to meet them. That she'd be able to spend an afternoon in Hogsmeade with Harry alone, sipping on hot cocoa and talking about nothing.
"Oh, hey," said Harry, reaching into his coat. "While we're here,"
He passed her a chocolate wand, fresh from Honeydukes.
(Y/N) grinned. She hoped Harry would mistake the pink of her cheeks for the cold. "Bit early for Christmas gifts, isn't it?" she said.
"I actually got you something else this year," he admitted, avoiding her eyes. "So I thought I'd just give this to you now."
(Y/N) could not believe it. She set the candy on the bench and with her free hand reached into her pocket. "I got you something else, too! Our first weekend at Hogsmeade!"
Harry looked stunned. "Really?"
Suddenly feeling embarrassed, (Y/N) hurried to explain. "Well, I saw it on display, see, and I knew you'd love it so I went ahead and got it then in case they sold out before the holiday–" She caught herself. "Anyway, here," she held out the chocolate frog. "You can have yours now, too."
Harry accepted it, looking quite flustered. "Thanks," he managed, fumbling at once to open it so he wouldn't have to meet her eyes.
To keep herself busy, (Y/N) opened up her own box and bit off a piece of candy, then pretended to be distracted by her coat buttons.
She was relieved when she heard Hermione's voice. "You two exchange gifts early this year?" The teasing edge to her voice was not at all subtle.
"Who'd you get this time, mate?" Ron nodded towards Harry's card.
He flashed it to him. "Laverne de Montmorency," he muttered.
(Y/N) went red as Hermione laughed loudly. Ron looked absolutely bewildered.
"What?"
Still giggling, Hermione answered, "She's famous for creating love potions,"
