"What is Ran doing?" You asked watching him look around the park and even peek into some of the park tunnels.
You shrugged to yourself and decided to continue your walk home not bothering to say anything to him. You remembered what he said the other day about him not being nice so you thought his nice facade was probably over by now. It felt weird to not spend your afternoon at the park but you didn't mind, something different for once. You made it back home and saw your moms car in the driveway. Seeing your mom home always put a smile on your face.
"Hi mom!" You shouted as you walked in and shut the door behind you.
"Hi honey. You're home later than usual. See that boy maybe?" She asked winking at you as she stirred the pot on the stove.
"Oh no, he hasn't been around, and we were given a report so I went to the library to try and get it done early." You chuckled at her wink at you.
"Aww thats too bad." She said frowning. "Well anyway, dinner is almost done, could you grab some plates and silverware?" She asked taking one last taste before turning the stove off.
You passed her a plate and she dished out some food onto it and handed it back. You passed her the second plate as you took the first to the table. She followed behind as passed the plate to you. You brought it over to your spot and sat down. You picked up a small spoonful before your mother spoke.
"I got a offered a promotion baby." She said softly while she watched your eyes grow wide.
"REALLY MOM?!" You asked excited.
"Haha yeah." She giggled at your reaction. "You're looking at possibly the new company president." She said smiling, taking a bite of dinner.
"I'm so proud of you mom! I told you you could do it." You said getting up and hugging her.
"Yeah..." She trailed off. "I don't know if I'm gonna take it though." She whispered.
"Why in the world would you not take a promotion like that? You deserve it so much." You said.
"I already have late nights with the position I have now, being president, late nights would probably be an everyday thing." She said sadly.
Ever since you were little you were your moms pride and joy. Any little scratch and she'd cry enough for you and her. Not having your dad in your life meant she had to step up and be both mommy and daddy when you were younger. You watched your mom struggle to support you growing up and you always said that when you were old enough, you'd make enough money to take care of her. Your mom always beat herself up when she had to work late because she definitely missed some important things when you were a kid.
"Mom its okay, take that position. I love you but I'm not a baby anymore, the only things you're gonna need to worry about is making it to my graduations." You smiled.
She looked at you, her eyes slightly wet.
"I guess you're right. My baby is all grown up now." She smiled back. "Okay honey, I'm gonna take the position."
"Yeah thats what I thought." You joked taking a bite of food making your mom laugh.
Once your mom and you had finished dinner you gathered the plates and silverware and brought it over to the sink to clean. Your mom helped you dry the dishes before putting them away. You asked your mom more about her promotion trying to see what would change by her getting the promotion. The biggest change was just that she would be coming home later than she usually would, which you didn't mind. If she was happy with her promotion, you'd be okay with spending less time with her.
"Okay mom, I'm gonna go to bed. I love you." You said giving her a hug and a kiss.
"Goodnight baby." She said kissing you back.
You made your way to your bedroom and laid in your bed. Thankfully the weekend was coming up so it'd give you a chance to relax after the hectic week you've had. Your brain thankfully had decided to slow down so you could finally close your eyes and fall asleep. You awoke the next day to hear some commotion coming from the kitchen. You stood up and walked out of your room to see your mother running around the house.
"Mom? Are you okay?" You asked as she quickly shuffled out of her room and to the laundry room.
"Huh? Oh yeah I'm okay sweetie. Just trying to get everything in order for Monday." She smiled. "Umm could you do me a favor hun? Could you sometime during the day run to the store to get me more envelopes? I went through the last of them last night." She asked pausing her movement for a second.
"Of course." You smiled going back to your room to get dressed.
Once you had gotten dressed you grabbed your phone and bag and walked back out to the kitchen. You saw your mom spreading out some papers on the table in an attempt to organize them. You said your goodbyes quickly before slipping your sneakers on and heading out the door. You made your way to the store enjoying the nice breeze that blew through your hair every now and then. You bought what your mom needed and soon you were making the journey back home.
You passed the park on your way home. You heard what sounded like a group of kids yelling which caught your attention. As you passed by the park you looked to see what was going on. You see about five guys on the ground with two others standing. You watched as one of the boys kicked one of the kids on the ground.
You could see someone talking from that group but due to distance, couldn't make out what they were saying. As you went to leave you noticed one of the boys had hair that very closely resembled Ran's. It was long, the color was black and blonde, and in pigtail braids. There was no doubt in your mind it was Ran, but who was the other one with him? All you could see was the other boys hair was blonde with some blue highlights throughout.
You remembered that Ran had said awhile back that he had a younger brother who would usually fight alongside him but never said what he looked like. You watched as they continued to exchange words with each other, a boy on the ground receiving a kick or punch every now and then. You watched as Ran pulled out some weapon and brought it down across one of the boy's faces. You continued to watch as Ran and his assumed brother nearly beat the group of kids until they were basically a bloody mess. You watched as fear bubbled up inside of you.
Watching this felt like the equivalent of witnessing a huge car wreck. The blood made you want to look away and run but something was preventing you from doing so. Or at least you thought until one of the boys on the ground pointed in your direction causing Ran, and the multicolor haired boy to turn around and look back at you. You locked eyes with Ran and immediately turned and ran in the direction of your house. You didn't dare turn around to check if either of them were following you, you just wanted to get home.
Rounding the corner of your street you stopped to look and saw no one following you so you speed walked the rest of the way home. You tried your best to calm your heavy breathing so your mom wouldn't question anything. You made it home and took your shoes off. You walked into the kitchen and placed the bag from the store on the table.
"Thank you so much honey. You're a lifesaver." Your mom said kissing your head.
"Ahh, no problem." You said still trying to catch your breath.
"Are you okay (Y/N)? You sound like you ran home." She said pointing out your harsh breathing.
"Hmm? Oh yeah I'm fine." You lied.
Of course you weren't going to tell her about the horrid scene you saw in the park. The day continued on as usual, your mother keeping an eye on you. She could tell something was off, your face practically telling her without any words. Once nighttime rolled around you sat in your bed unable to sleep. The only thing that you could see when your eyes shut was the blood splattering on the ground from the kids head.
You always wondered what Ran meant when he said he "wasn't nice" and now you knew. You never thought someone who showed you such kindness could have the guts to do that to another human being. The scene replayed in your head countless times, almost making you nauseous. You laid awake until you could see the sun almost starting to rise through your window. You managed to fall asleep but only due to you basically passing out due to sleepiness.
