Dead Prayer - Peaky Blinders

Adopted

Lily had few memories from before she was taken. The day she was taken was quite normal in retrospect but it all changed well her mother - Polly was sleeping. Her Father - his actual name she couldn't recall - was drunk and had just left Polly again. Polly had cried throughout the night and finally tried herself out by morning. It was then that the parish came to take Michael, Anna and her away. Lily being the oldest meant she protested the most. 

This meant she was separated from her siblings and didn't see them until a week after when all the children of the church orphanage were lined up for an inspection of some kind. Michael and Anna were both there but Lily was soon adopted by a family - the Robinsons - and never saw them again after that.

The Robinsons were a nice couple who had a boy who had recently left home - James - they wanted another child but were getting too old and decided to adopt. They treated Lily well with the little money they had, Mr Robinson's owned a small business that sold and made shoes - a cobbler. But the business wasn't doing well and it slowly declined. 

By the time Lily was 13, they could barely afford to put food down for one meal let alone three for an entire family. They decided that they would give her back to the orphanage but couldn't afford the money to travel to it, so instead decided on the closest one - Wool's Orphanage was the closest and so they dropped Lily off at the Orphanage at the start of summer 1911.

It was again only a short time before she was adopted again. This time it was a young Jewish couple - The Goldmann's. They were in their late 20s and had been trying for children for many years but after many Doctor's appointments, they realised it was impossible. So adoption was the last result.

John and Edith Goldmann had to be the kindest people on earth to Lily and she so wished many more were like that. Lily wanted to convert to Judaism a few months after living with them and it took around a full year for it to properly happen but she couldn't have been happier. 

Lily lived with them for roughly 5 years - when she turned 18 she moved out and they bought her her very own apartment as a present. 

Lily loved the Goldmann's and was glad she was so lucky.
