I sit up suddenly. Someone is peeking through the door. It's dark, I can't see who. What the hell?
"Who's there?" I call out.
"Oh, sorry, didn't mean to wake you," a familiar voice whispers, ready to close the door.
"Wait, Daisy?" I mumble, relaxing.
"Yeah, sorry. I'll come back later if you want," she says quietly.
Of course I'm not going to let her leave. She came to see me. She wanted to see me. Or another interrogation. Who knows.
"No. I mean- I'm awake anyway, so come in," I tell her. We haven't spoken for a while. But I suppose that's my fault.
Daisy smiles and walks in, holding a food tray. Food? I'm in. She places it on the nightstand beside the bed and then leans on the wall, crossing her arms.
"Thought you might be hungry. How are you feeling?" she asks, turning her full attention to me now.
"I'm good. Healing powers, remember?" I say.
She sits down on the bed and smiles, getting more comfortable.
"Yeah. Kind of jealous of you. I can quake shit, but you. You're basically immortal. Wait, are you actually immortal? Like, can you heal yourself from any injury?" she asks, suddenly very interested, as if that's the most important thing in the world right now. I was not expecting that. Thought I was about to be given a long lecture about my escape.
"Well, I suppose. Never gotten any deadly injuries though. But the bigger the injury, the more time and energy it takes to heal," I explain. Daisy looks slightly surprised for a second, then the expression disappears, replacing with enthusiasm.
"And you can save other people too, right? Dying people? You should be a doctor. I mean, imagine how many lives you could save! Yeah, but that would draw a lot of attention, can't have that.."
She looks distracted by her thoughts, not paying attention to me anymore. I take the tray from the nightstand, almost dropping it. My hand is still not strong enough.
"Hey, careful," she quickly reaches over me for the tray, touching my hand in the process. A hot wave rushes through my body and my arm goes weak, almost dropping the food again. My head goes empty and I lose the feeling of existence. And just like that I snap back.
Daisy holds onto the tray and places it down on my lap. My eyes fall down, not being able to process what had happened.
"You alright?" she asks, concern flashing through her voice.
I barely hear her, completely taken aback by what I just felt. My body is frozen and I can't move my lips to form out a simple 'Yes'. Yeah, the day I first met Daisy I felt an attraction towards her. But that happens all the time. THIS doesn't.
I force myself to look her in the eye and nod. She doesn't buy it. I know she doesn't.
"Is it your hand? It takes time to heal, don't worry about it. Makes sense it's still weak. With your powers you'll be 100% in a couple of days," Daisy tries to assure me, placing a hand on my shoulder. Wrong move.
"Uhh- yeah. I don't wan- I'm not hungry anymore," I try to form words, suddenly forgotten the entire language.
"You sure? You should eat. Proper food. Just eat a little. Please," she pleads me. With a very cute fricking smile. Not fair. I take a moment to gather myself. I got this. I'll have time to be freaked out later.
"Alright. What did you bring me?" I ask, opening one of the food containers, avoiding eye contact.
She smiles victoriously, pushing herself to sit up straighter. She gestures towards the container I just opened. "In there should be some pasta. I wasn't sure what you would want to eat, but everyone loves pasta, right?"
Oh god, I absolutely love pasta. "In the blue one are carrots and avocado slices. Because, healthy, you know?" she continues. "And the yellow box's got apple pie. I wanted to eat it myself, but thought you might like it, so here you go."
I nod, grabbing a fork for the pasta. "Thank you," I say, and push the yellow container towards her, "but you can have it. I probably won't eat that much anyway."
Daisy's eyes light up, but she seems unsure. "You really don't mind? Because this pie is really good," she teases. I shake my head. "It's fine. I guess I'll have to stick around long enough for the next time you bring me pie."
Her face drops a little. If she wasn't sitting so close to me I wouldn't have even noticed.
"So.. you're okay with staying? For a bit?"
"Well, do I have a choice?" We all know the answer to that. "I also though, maybe I could.. help? With Inhumans?" I add quietly.
To be honest, the thought had crossed my mind a couple of times since the attack with Alicia. Inhumans are my friends. My family. And if someone wants to hurt them, hurt us, I should help. Because I can.
Daisy looks confused. "You mean like.. on missions? With us? The team?"
"Yeah. I want to help you take down whoever is hunting Inhumans. Us," I say with more confidence now. No time for doubt. I just want to help.
"But didn't you just hate us guts? You escaped, let me remind you," she is still puzzled. That's fair. "I did. You weren't telling me anything and letting me go home. I was scared. I still don't trust all of your friends but I know you're helping Inhumans. That's enough for now."
She looks me deep in the eyes, thinking. It makes me nervous for multiple reasons. Finally, she opens her mouth. "I mean- that would.. uhm.. you would-"
"I just want to know, could I? Is it possible even the slightest bit?" I stop her mid-sentence. The truth is, I will try and fight anyway, I have to, but it would be a lot easier with Daisy's team. They have information on Inhumans and know how to find them. Alone I'd be running blind.
Daisy thinks for a minute. "You're not going to stop, are you? If I'd say no, you'd go solo, right?" It's as if she was reading my thoughts. I nod. No point of lying. "Yeah. I won't give up until my friends are safe."
She hesitates. "I don't know, Leah. I really don't. It takes a lot of training, even with powers like yours. Can't go running around when you can't throw a punch. You have to be both physically and mentally strong, and you most likely will get hurt. And beside all that, I'm not sure what Coulson will think about it. Especially after what happened a couple of days ago. I will talk to him, but I can't promise you anything," she warns, trying to not give me too much hope.
Nonetheless, this gives me hope. "Thank you, Daisy. Really, this means a lot. Thank you." I can't put into words how much it means to me, so I just hope she knows.
Daisy nods, standing up from the bed. "Yeah. I'll try. I better get going now, got a bunch of stuff to do. I'll be back soon, alright?" she puts her warm hand on my shoulder and I have to stop myself from leaning in. Daisy smiles and walks out, glancing back one more time.
"Thank you," I say again.
She nods and leaves.
I throw my head against the headrest of the bed and groan. What is happening to me? I close my eyes and try to focus. My brain is having trouble processing everything that had just happened. I frustratedly rub my face. Thoughts are swimming through my head million miles per hour. This is living hell.
After around 10 minutes when I come back to reality I notice the cold pasta sitting in the pink container on my lap. Shit. Totally forgot about that. Well, I guess cold food it is.
