THE FORGE — nwh-post
( ASHLEE'S VERSION )
MARGARET JUNE THOMPSON WOKE UP IN HER BED, as if it were any other day. She brushed her teeth as if it were any other day. However, the day she left on was not a normal day for her world had been altered unknowingly. As a past-friend entered the worst of his living, she spat her slushed toothpaste into the sink. Upon looking in the mirror, she saw hollow eyes and bruises on her skin. Her eyes furrowed as her hand reached up to graze them with the palm of her finger. In a blink, the bruise had gone. Instead, leaving smooth, brown, skin in replacement. She blinked once. Then again. There was no need for a bruise to be fresh on her skin. Only then did it fully occur to her something was wrong. Only to set in stone, her suit was on the tub. Margaret swore she had it locked up in a safe. The key was in the Hudson. How would she ever be able to get the suit out?
She grabbed her phone off of the sink, calling in sick for work. With the hours she had thrown in, the woman on the other line assured her it would be fine for her to miss one day. A resident would take over her patients for that day.
She breathed out a hefty breath, leaning back onto her couch. There was an odd smell lingering in the room. Margaret was painfully aware of the sents in her home and the aroma in the air was not her own. Had she had a guy over? Surely not. Margaret hadn't dated in years.
Her finger pressed the channel button on the black remote. She boringly flipped through the TV for it seemed to be the only thing to stop her mind from wandering off. "If Spiderman truly wanted to protect us, he would show us his identi-" She rolled her eyes, skipping the channel. The next one, however, was simply static. She looked down at the remote - than back up at the TV. Her eyebrows furrowed.
"Marge!" A voice yelled in her ear.
The woman jumped up quickly, "What?!" She looked around anxiously, only for not a single soul to be there.
"God, it's been a day and you've forgotten about me. Though, I suppose you did forget a lot last night. Honestly so rude of you, Marge-marge." Tony sung.
Margaret sighed, sitting back down onto her couch. "What is it, Tony?"
"So- uh. I don't know how I'm going to do this. I forgot- oh yeah, Mare vitae per oculos tuos fluentem memento; bene memores pueri qui intorta plates. Mementote Petri Parker. Mementote Spiderman. Mementote noctis faciem." He said stiffly as if reading off of a script. "Remember, Margaret."
Before she could ask Tony what spell he had sat upon her, the grasp she had on reality fell. In a rush of colors, feelings, and emotions, her world spun around anxiously. It flashed vibrant colors in front of her eyes. In her mind, thoughts flew around her head.
Peter Parker, nephew of May Parker, was spider-man. Peter-Two. Green Goblin. The multiverse was opened. Attractive-Peter. "Holy shit!" the woman yelled, grabbing her coat and running to the coffee shop MJ worked at. Her heart sputtered. Everyone was meant to forget Peter and yet she didn't. She didn't forget him! However, she was not sure if MJ and Ned were so gracefully blessed with the same fate she had been.
Upon arrival, she opened the door to the shop quickly. Instead of seeing MJ and Ned speaking about MIT as they should've been, she was met with a shop of people she had never once seen before. She walked over to the waitress. A blonde woman with shortish-bangs and the bluest eyes she had ever seen. "Hello!" She chirped, "Is Michelle Jones here today?"
With gum smacking obnoxiously in her mouth, the woman's nose scrunched up, "That person doesn't work here." She said. Margaret looked down at her shirt. The tag on her chest reading, 'Hallie :)'. She quickly looked up again to prove she wasn't checking the girl out.
"Uh- right." Margaret coughed, rubbing the bottom of her nose. A red blush rose on her skin. God, she probably looked insane. "Must be the wrong place. Can I just get a Carmel Machiotto?"
Hallie smacked down on her gum again, writing Margaret' s order down on a paper. "Your name?"
"Margaret." She rolled back in her heels.
The blonde nodded, leaving to the back. As she left, Margaret's leg began to bounce with nerves. She had to be at the wrong shop, right? She looked around the diner, a magazine on the table catching her attention. It sat lonesome, facing towards the sky. The words on the header glew: SPIDER-MAN MISSES A NIGHT OF CRIME: THE ROBBERY ON MAIN + AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH NEW YORKS CRIME FIGHTER.
Missing a night of crime? Had New-York also forgotten about the attack? Surely a memory of why their Statue of Liberty was close to ruins would stand out.
She reached to take the magazine in her hand. Before she could begin to read the exclusive interview, one thing on the cover caught her quick attention. It shone through more than the rest being covered on paper: a bad-quality photo of Spider-Man swinging showed on the front. Only, this was not the Spider-Man her New-York had grown to love. His build was different; webs not the same; the suit was different. But yet, familiar.
On the cover had been Peter Parker. Only, this was not the Peter Parker she fought Thanos with. This was Peter-Parker-three.
Margaret dropped the Magazine with a slight gasp. Without thought, she ran out of the Coffee shop. She heard Hallie yell out her name as she ran off. Once outside, her head spun around the buildings. Only then did she notice the small differences to New York. Little billboards showcasing only Spider-Man rather than all of the avengers. Some statues decorating the streets were gone. Most of all, however, on one billboard, she noticed the glowing white suit standing next to a Spider-Man that was not her own. Large words reading, 'our New-York hero's!' danced under the bottom.
Margaret remained to be Halo in another world. But, she was nothing more than forge as she stood in the New York cold.
