An interlude before shit hits the fan. Don't worry, Viktor will make an appearance as well - stay tuned for that chapter! Anyway, Jayce: at first I was like 'ooh magic himbo' but then his morals died a horrible death.

Jayce takes a deep breath. The last time he had been to the Kiramman Estate, Caitlyn had essentially thrown him out; he had offered her a job as council security after she lost her Enforcer position, but she told him in no kind words she did not want his pity. Jayce respected her boundaries, so he hadn't returned since - not even after Councillor Kiramman's death. The last time they had seen each other was at the funeral, and even then they had barely spoken.

Word on the street said she had become a sort of vigilante since her employment was terminated. Everyone knew her as the 'councillor's daughter who ran off with a trencher'. While this was partly true, Jayce hated the assumption she was just a naive and petty rich girl on her rebellious streak: he had seen the passion she put in her work, the fire in her eyes. And Vi's, too. He did like her, at first. She was determined and charismatic. But it turned out the felon was nothing but trouble; not only was she a Stillwater escapee, but... he shivered. Seeing the light fade from that boy's eyes haunted him even months later.

Though, it had pushed any thought of war from his mind. So I can thank her for that, I guess.

Well, anyway. He was here now because he wanted to fix things with Caitlyn: he knew her mother's death had shaken her and made her feel responsible for the detainment of criminals, so he figured he should extend a hand of support. There were other places she could make a difference that didn't involve putting herself in danger: she could be a lawyer, or a politician, or something.

(And also, he missed her. Viktor was an incredible man, but lately he had been too absorbed in his work.)

Jayce knocks on the door. There is movement at the window, so he looks up with a fond smirk, expecting to see a familiar face looking down at him.

It's sickeningly familiar.

He meets Jinx's eyes.
