a pair of chocolate-hued pupils met my own as i spun to identify the voice that had rung out from behind me.

camilo beckoned towards me with an outstretched hand, inciting me to move nearer. the notes of the lively music orchestrated themselves at a heightened volume, as i placed my hand in his. he pulled me closer to him and we began to dance, moving as one to the tune's ongoing rhythm. for a while time stood still, whilst everyone danced as though the thought of tomorrow was a faint delusion, a trick of the mind.

"not bad," admitted the curly-haired boy as he dipped, caught me in his arms, then lifted me back up with ease.

"you used that line already, casanova," i informed him with a raise of my eyebrow. "maybe try something different?"

he opened his mouth in a quick fashion, about to return my bantering, when the crowd grew hushed and each pair of eyes were drawn to the center of the fiasco.

"the house is in danger!..." at this, camilo let go of my hand and rushed to his mother, who had suffered an instant raincloud to the head the minute the sentence had been uttered.

"the house is in danger, there were cracks everywhere, the candle almost went out..." i struggled to get a better view above the sea of people, but mirabel's worried tone could be told apart in the sheer silence of the shocked environment. abuela's face hardened as she held a hand out to the agitated female.

"show me".

at this, the populace filed out of antonio's jungle paradise of a sleeping chamber, in unsaid anticipation of the spectacle that had sent mirabel into such a frenzied state of mind. a serene casita met us outside. not a frame was out of place, nor were there cracks and gashes along the walls as mirabel had so vividly inscribed into our minds.

"there is nothing wrong with la casa madrigal," abuela turned towards us and spread her arms open wide as if embracing us along with the magic she cherished so much. "the magic is strong! and so are the drinks," she added with a wink. hilarity rippled through the crowd like a tidal wave crashing onto a rocky shore. camilo shot me a glance from the opposite banister, then ushered antonio back into the room with the others.

"i know what i saw," i overheard mirabel mutter under her breath, disguising her inward malady towards her abuela's ignorance at her own cost. "i don't know if it'll be of much use, but i believe you," i reached for her hand and squeezed it tightly in an attempt to show her the support i wished to convey.

"thanks," she said weakly as the two of us followed her mother into the deserted kitchen.
