From the day Rose was born her mother had a tight hold on her. Not that she was complaining her childhood was filled with laughs and love and burnt breakfast. She was never degraded or discarded. She always had someone in her corner. When she got picked on by the girls down the road or when Mr Rogers their old raggedy next door neighbor complained about her tap dancing in the run down hallways of their apartment building. The fiery spirit that raised her would raise hell. Whether it was telling the parents of the snot nosed girls that she saw them talking to a group of older boys down by the water or running from our apartment in all her glory, blonde hair wet and a towel wrapped around her body while the tooth brush in her mouth bod up and down as she told mr rogers to stick his cane up where the sun doesn't shine. She was always there.

Mary Margaret baker.

So one would be surprised to find the 11 year old standing alone on platform 9 ¾ on her first day at a magical school.

It all started when a letter had shown up at their doorstep addressed to Rose announcing that Rose had magical powers she was...a witch. It came as quite a shock to the both of them. so much of a shock that mary margret didn't speak for a week. Until one day when Rose sat in the shabby match living room one morning before Rose was supposed to leave and she finally came out of her room, she walked into the kitchen and came back with two teas.

"Lets talk" is all Mary said as she sat down in the arm chair across from rose. The coffee table separated the two of them as she sat one tea mug in front of Rose and held on to the other bringing it up to her lips. Rose looked down at the cup Black just how I had always drank it.

"Lets" Rose said, eyeing her carefully while picking up her cup. Her mother was known for her periods of silence since she was little at least once or twice a year. Mary Margaret would lock herself up and Rose wouldn't see her for weeks; this was nothing new to me.

"I don't really understand this.. The idea of magic that is." she clarifide

" and to be honest Rose i'm quite scared"

Rose looked at her with wide eyes,

"But it makes sense" mary finished

"How?" Rose didn't know how any of this made any sense.

"Well, do you ever remember when you were a little girl and you had all these little... quirks?"

Rose shook my head taking a sip of her tea.

"right ... well take it from me, the mavroulis woman who raised you, you did"

Rose didn't dare let a giggle escape my lips.

" You really can't take anything seriously can you?"

Rose smiled, Mary paused for a moment, Rose could have sworn her mother almost shed a tear until she cleared her throat and continued.

"No i can't not" she smiled

"But I must be because if you're going through with this we have to lay down some rules."

"Rules?" rose asked in almost disguised

" Since when do you follow rules?"

" don't get smart, this is uncharted territory missy. So yes there will be rules." she sassed back.

"Okay what are the rules then?"

" I'm happy you asked," Mary cleared her throat and sat up straight, setting her tea on the table.

"One: listen to your teachers. They know more than you do.

Two: you go to class and you go to bed. That's it" rose interrupted her

" No dinner or breakfast then?"

" THREE: don't be a smartass no one likes a smartass"

Roses eyes rolled her eyes at her mother

"And most importantly

Four: do not and I repeat do NOT put yourself in any kind of danger. Always do what's best for yourself don't be selfless"

Rose couldn't figure out why out of all the time her and her mother spent breaking rules and messing around she was choosing now to be strict. Rose eyed her mother trying to understand her.

"What...no one likes a hero" mary finished

"You have to be the strangest mother out there"

" you would be surprised. '' she laughed as she came around and sat on the couch with her pulling rose into a cheek squishing side hug.

"I love you so much, Rosie," she said.

" i love you to mum"

So when the day came for Rose to finally leave they sat in the car looking out on all the families rushing into the station.

"So you really won't come in with me" Rose broke the silence.

"Rose i've already told you-"

" yeah yeah big crowds freak you out. Its just your not going to see me until Christmas and-" Mary pulled her face to look at hers.

"You are going to be just fine. Just remember the rules."

Rose nodded.

"Know get in there you're going to be late" Mary's eyes teared up and they both knew if Rose didn't get out of the car now there was a good chance Mary would drive away with her still in it.

Rose opened the door and pulled her trunk out of the back seat along with her new pet owl. Mary margret had shown up after a day out with all of the nessatiys rose would need at schooling including the all black owl.

The two waved at each other window thinking that was the last they would be seeing of each other until christmas until the car gave a honk and rose spun back around to her mother beeping the horn and rolled her window down.

"Also rose if you meet a group of kids that seem like they are up to nothing good. Run far, FAR away get it.'' Mary shouted out the window. Rose stared at her mother with eyes of embarrassment as people stopped and stared at the two.

" Have fun, love you lots" she smiled and started to pull the car away.

Rose turned around rolling her eyes as she made her way into the station.

After following her mother's directions she was now standing in front of a scarlett train watching as families said goodbye to their kids of all ages.

"You've got something on your nose ron."

she looked over to see a family of redheads, as what she assumed was the mother trying to wipe something off the young boy's face. She giggled to herself as she made her way onto the train.

She walked the isle trying to find a place to sit, all the compartments seeming to be full she found one with just one boy with dark hair sitting in it looking like he might like some company. She opened the compartment door and popped her head in.

"Hi there" she smiled.

The boy looked up at her. He had circle rimmed glasses and bright green eyes. He smiled at her. He didn't say anything so rose cleared her through and continued the conversation.

" Do you mind if I sit with you?" she asked surprisingly, a little nervous that the boy would say no.

" Of course?" he jestered to the set across from him.

" Rose baker" she reached her hand across to him .

" Harry potter" he said he took her hand in his.
